  1. Bread for the World Sunday 2013 Turn your faith into action

  2. Bread for the World Sunday We join thousands of other Christians across the country as we lift up our voices on behalf of hungry people. Through education, prayer, and worship, we commit ourselves to the fight against hunger and poverty in our country and around the world.

  3. The Face of Hunger in a World of Plenty • Nearly 16,000 children die every day from hunger-related causes. That is one child every five seconds. • In developing nations, one out of four persons lives in extreme poverty—on less than $1.25 a day. • In the United States, one in five children lives in a family that struggles to put food on the table.

  4. Charity is Not Enough Charity alone is simply not a realistic solution. Essential federal nutrition assistance programs must be protected and improved. These programs are the country’s true first line of defenseagainsthunger.

  5. God’s Heart to Help Hungry People “Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin?” —Isaiah 58: 6-7

  6. God’s Heart to Help Hungry People Jesus said to them, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” —Matthew 25:35-36

  7. Jesus Calls Us We have the knowledge and resources to end widespread hunger. As followers of Jesus Christ, we listen to God’s voice and use our own voices to speak up for an end to hunger. As God’s hands and feet in the world, we can work toward a community in which every person has an equal opportunity to thrive.

  8. Our Response We can use our voices to challenge our nation’s decision makers to change laws and structures that keep people vulnerable. Bread for the World equips and inspires its members to meet with, call, and write personal letters and emails to their members of Congress.

  9. Our Mission Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home and abroad.

  10. Turn Your Faith Into Action • Pray for all those who struggle with hunger and poverty. • Sign the petition to the president, asking him to set a goal and work with Congress on a plan to end hunger in the United States and abroad. Visit: www.bread.org/petitionthepresident • Write or call your members of Congress and urge them to protect programs vital to hungry and poor people. • Join Bread for the World and learn more about what you can do to end hunger.
