  2. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” Texts: 1 Samuel 16 and 17; Ruth 4:13-17

  3. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” • Jesse WAS a Godly Father...God Never Would’ve Asked for Him and His Sons If Not (1 Samuel 16:1-5)

  4. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 1 Sam. 16:1The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

  5. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’

  6. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.”

  7. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

  8. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

  9. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” • Jesse Commanded His Boys’ Respect (1 Samuel 17:12-20)

  10. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 1 Sam. 17:12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years.

  11. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

  12. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 14 David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

  13. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.

  14. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 17 And Jesse said to David his son, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers.

  15. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 18 Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.”

  16. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 19 Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

  17. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 20 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry.

  18. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” • Jesse was Responsible for His Sons’ SpiritualGrowth -- Not the Reverse! (1 Samuel 16:6-13)

  19. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 1 Sam. 16:6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.”

  20. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”

  21. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”

  22. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.”

  23. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

  24. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”

  25. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”

  26. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

  27. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” • Jesse’s Son (King David) Certainly Eclipsed His Father’s Godly Influence

  28. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” So...What was Jesse’s Big Secret to Raising Godly Children? It’s No Secret - It’s ALL ABOUT GODLY FATHERS and GRANDFATHERS! (Ruth 4:13-17)

  29. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” Ruth 4:13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.

  30. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel!

  31. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

  32. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse.

  33. “Being a ‘Jesse’ Father” 17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
