  3. Review • Poor oral hygiene is linked to: • Cardiovascular disease • Poor glycemic control • Pneumonia • Stroke • Weight loss • Pressure ulcers • Hospital readmission rates

  7. How to prevent the fear response • Smile • Lower tone of voice • Move and speak slowly • Simple instructions • Remove distractions • Do NOT Rush

  8. Approach resident • From the front • Maintain eye level • Introduce self in a lower pitch voice • Address the person by name • Introduce yourself “Good morning John. I am Mary, your nurse”

  10. Other special care considerations • Stroke • Parkinson’s disease • Arthritis

  11. Stroke may cause problems with: • Vision • Hearing • Remembering, thinking and understanding others

  12. Stroke can cause: • Paralysis of the face and mouth resulting in “one sided neglect”

  13. Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Arthritis Can make brushing difficult. Child-size toothbrush head for the resident who has trouble opening mouth.
