Key Events • Antoninus was adopted at the age of 51 by Hadrian who made him emperor. • At the time he was appointed, he had not living sons remaining and only one daughter, who married Marcus Aurelius. • He lived to the age of 74, longer than any other emperor since Augustus a century before • He was born Titus Aurelius Fulvus Noionus Arrius Antoninus on September 19, 86 • His grandfather was on the council twice and his father once • His father died when he was young so he was broguth up by his grandparents. • The properties he inherited by both sides of the family made him one of the richest men in Rome. • Distinguished senator and then on the council. Also served as governor in Asia minor • No military knowledge

  3. Contributions • He passed a law that protected slaves against cruelty and indecent abuse. • He was not ambitious and did not do much during his rule. He did manage to keep peace and was well liked by the senate. • Built the Antonine wall in place of Hadrian’s wall.

  4. Characteristics • Strikingly handsome • Well liked by the senate and the people • Accomplished public speaker • Was calm and well tempered • Was very rich before he become emperor • Highly respected by all

  5. My Opinion • I Think that he was a good emperor. He was fair and compassionate and all the people liked him. He was just and tried to help the slaves by giving them more rights and protecting them. He didn’t try any major conquests and did not start any wars. • He died over a period of three day fro ma fever. According to his biographer it was because of over-indulgence of Alpine cheese.
