  8. Pre-Raphaelitism • In the early 1850s • Paid attention to naturalistic detail • Used vivid color • Explored medieval and literary subject matter • Founded by William Holman Hunt, John Everett Millais and Dante Gabriel Rossetti

  9. Pre-Raphaelite • Rejected the Academic tradition • The 3 artists chose the name `Pre-Raphaelite’ because they wanted to return to what they considered to be the painterly and spiritual `purity’ of art prior to Raphael.

  10. Realism • Mid to late 19th century • Artist should represent the world as it is • Strongest in France • Gustave Courbet & Edouard Manet • Freeing art from social conventions • Exploring how society shapes people’s lives

  16. Materialism • Believe that a person’s moral, intellectual and emotional being is molded by his environment • Rejected Idealism and Romanticism • Claims that physical world shapes human identity, ideas and experiences • Neo-Conceptualists are part of the materialist tradition
