  2. Phasing in subjects Sept. 2014, First certification in 2017 English (Second and Third years) Sept. 2016, first certification in 2019 Science and Business Studies. (Second and Third Years) Sept. 2017, first certification in 2020 Irish, Art, Modern Foreign Languages – French, Spanish and German. (Second Years)

  3. Phasing in subjects cont. Sept. 2018, first certification 2021 History, Home Economics, Music, Geography and Maths. (Additional subjects for First Years) Sept. 2019, first certification 2022 Technology Subjects and R.E.

  4. What is different? Terminal exam (90%) marked as usual by the S.E.C. external examiners. Grades Awarded: Distinction = 90 - 100 Higher Merit = 75 - 89 Merit = 55 - 74 Achieved = 54 - 40 Partially Achieved 39 - 20 No Grade = 19 - 0

  5. WHAT IS DIFFERENT? Cont. * Assessment Task (10%) marked by the S.E.C. external examiners. Linked to the second Classroom Based Assessment in each subject. *Terminal exam – all subjects – Two hours. *All subjects only have one paper. *The only subjects with two levels – Higher and Ordinary are Irish, English and Maths. All other subjects are taken at a common level.

  6. WHAT IS DIFFERENT ?cont. Classroom Based Assessments – two per subject. In Class-Assessment – linked to the second Classroom Based Assessment. Other Areas of Learning. Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement.

  7. Classroom Based Assessments. Third Year – November to February 2018/2019. English – The Collection of Student’s Texts. Business Studies – Business Presentation. Science – Science in Society Investigation.

  8. Classroom Based Assessments. Second Years – from January to May 2019. English – Oral Communication task. Business Studies – Business in Action. Science – Extended Experimental Investigation. Modern Foreign Languages – Oral Communication task. Visual Art – From Process to Realisation.

  9. Classroom Based Assessments. Marked by the class teacher in collaboration with their colleagues (in their subject department) based on the “Features of Quality” as provided by the Department of Education. Marks are not awarded, just a descriptor. These are recorded in a separate section on the JCPA to the results of the terminal exams.

  10. Classroom Based Assessments. Descriptors: Exceptional. Above Expectations. In Line with Expectations. Yet to meet Expectations. Not Recorded.

  11. Assessment Task.Important Dates. These take place in class and Third Year students must be in attendance for the following dates: English – Monday 3rd – Friday 7th December. Science – Monday 28th January – Friday 1st February. Business Studies – Monday 10th – Friday 14th December. As in the State Exams, only students who have been hospitalised and can provide a medical certificate will be accommodated at an alternative date.

  12. Other Areas of Learning. This is another recording section on the JCPA. It includes all the learning students have done over their three years which has not been recorded elsewhere on their JCPA. Activities include all extra-curricular activities they have been involved in – sports, choir, debating, musical, orchestra, Student Council, talks they have attended, charity work they have been involved in, etc.

  13. Other Areas of Learning cont. Students will have a class on filling out the Other Areas of Learning section at the beginning of the last term. They will be given a handout with all the possible activities they have participated in over the three years. They will be asked to bring the handout home and discuss it with you when making their final choices.
