Stages of Language Development in Children PRE-LINGUISTIC STAGE (0-6 MONTHS) Involves nonverbal communication, laying the foundation for language development through crying, cooing, and gestures. BABBLING STAGE (6-12 MONTHS) Children start experimenting with sounds and say their first simple words like "mama" or "dada. SINGLE-WORD STAGE (18-24 MONTHS) Toddlers use single words to convey complete thoughts, such as "milk" or "up. TELEGRAPHIC STAGE (12-18 MONTHS) Toddlers say their first words, following simple instructions and starting to understand basic commands. TWO-WORD STAGE (24-36 MONTHS) Children combine two words to form basic sentences like "want toy" or "go park. MULTI-WORD STAGE (3-5 YEARS) Children communicate fluently with correct grammar and can engage in detailed conversations.
