  1. What are some things that money cannot buy?

  2. Making the Most of Classroom TIME! Anji and Xiaochen Song

  3. Types of Time • Mandated Time • Allocated Time • Instructional Time • Engaged Time • Productive Time • Academic Learning Time

  4. Example • Mandated Time: 180 days per school year. 7 hours per regular school day. • Allocated Time: Within the 7 hour day, an hour is for “specials”, and 5 hours for homeroom class. Half an hour for lunch and half an hour for recess.

  5. Using Classroom Time Efficiently • Maximize opportunities for learning. • Minimize opportunities for disruption.

  6. Maximize Opportunity to Learn • Maintaining the activity flow by avoiding: • Flip-flopping • Stimulus-bounded events • Over dwelling • Fragmentation

  7. Minimize Transition Time • Advance Preparation • The Use of Routines • Clear Beginnings and Ending • Holding Students Accountable

  8. Practical Ideas • Transition • Routines (xinyi’s song for the students to sit down) • Competition (which group sits down the fastest) • Praising (give positive feedback to the good behavior) • Activity Grouping • Preparing ahead of time for group assignment • Form groups by name drawings • Find your _clock partner • Instruction Giving • Instruction brief and easy to understand • Demonstrate • Make it as a habit for the student to listen to “begin”

  9. Clock Partner Example

  10. Hold Students Accountable

  11. Holding Students Accountable • Communicating Assignment and Requirement Number of explanations& high student success Ask for repetition of instruction given; demonstrate; daily and assignments schedule • Monitoring Student Progress Short-term: Circulate around the room; checking list Long-term: “plan of attack” • Establishing routines for collecting and checking class work and homework Be organized • Maintaining good records

  12. Manage “Pull-outs” as Efficiently as possible • Try to have input into scheduling • Create a schedule showing periods of time When various students are present and When the whole class is together • Establish a policy about the responsibility of Pulled-out students to complete work missed • Establish procedures for smooth transitions when They return to the classroom

  13. What Kind of Students Use The Most Time?

  14. Scenario • Ms. C is a kindergarten teacher. • Everyday before Chinese, they have recess outside for 20 minutes. Then another 20 minutes to come back and get ready for Chinese. • Most of the time when the Chinese teacher stepped into their room, there were about four children lining up to go to bathroom, and about four children waiting at the sink. • At the same time, the teacher was doing something at her table, or sitting in front of the other children and waiting for the Chinese teacher. • After Chinese, when the Chinese teacher told her “Ms. C, I’m done.” She sometimes responded while doing job at her desk (which was blocked away by a big easel) “Ok. They can wait. They should be patient!” • Then the Chinese teacher left the room with a group of children playing with whatever they want on the carpet behind her. • Analyze the problems in this scenario with the contents we just talked about. • What suggestions would you give to Ms. C?
