  2. OUTLINE • Context and organization • Recent progress • Near future… F

  3. HP-SPL main characteristics Beam characteristics of the main options 2 ´ beam current Þ 2 ´ nb. of klystrons etc . 3

  4. Resources • R & D for a High Power SPL formally supported at CERN in view of potential applications for n physics • ~1.7 MCHF and 6 FTEs / year • Collaboration with ESS • Fellows and procurement of klystron modulator for SM18 • French in-kind contribution • Tuners, Helium tanks, use of Saclay 704 MHz high power test place… • EC-supported programmes • EuCARD(WP10) • Development and test of beta=1 (CEA) and beta=0.65) 5 cells cavities • CRISP (WP4) • Joint work with ESS and DSY • EC-supported manpower for upgrading and exploiting the SM18 test place • LAGUNA-LBNO • EC-supported fellow for studying proton drivers at CERN using LP- or HP-SPL • DOE-supported programme • BNL • Development and test of a b=1 cavity 4

  5. Planning of SPL R § D Modulator from industry (ESS) To beupdatedat the beginning of 2012 5

  6. Planning overview • Until 2014 • Construction and test of a prototype cryomodule with 4 cavities • Construction and characterization of sc cavities • Upgrade of the SM18 infrastructure (clean room, 704 MHz RF, cryogenics) • Preparation for a full size cryomodule • Branching point for continuation • Recommendations of the European Strategy Group at end 2012/beginning 2013 • Updated Scientific Strategy of CERN by new DG: 2014? • Key ingredients for continuation: • Physics! Based on the results of LHC and of the on-going n experiments. • Strength / weaknesses of competing options (Linear collider …) • Strength / weaknesses of the SPL-related applications (Proton drivers for n facilities, Injectors for LHC-related future beyond HL-LHC, LHeC …) • CERN strategy for sc RF technology • Politics and collaborations… 6

  7. Related R & D Nb coating of Cu cavities, using the HIPIMS (High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering) technology • In collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University (UK). • Supported in the context of the construction of LHC spare cavities. • Potentially very attractive technology for the SPL (raw material cost, mechanical stiffness). • First results on low beta 704 MHz cavity: end 2012 7

  8. Present organization Study leader: R. Garoby Working Groups SPL Collaboration • SPL documentation in EDMS [ https://edms.cern.ch/nav/SLHC-000008 ] • SPL meetings in Indico [ http://indico.cern.ch/categoryDisplay.py?categId=1893 ] 8

  9. Principle of the future organization Motivation To better match the needs of the medium term goal of the HP-SPL R&D: Building and testing a prototype cryomodulewith 4 cavities Main principles • «Project-like» structure emphasizing relations between contributions (integrated planning) • Main objectives: • Design, construction and test of the prototype cryomodule • Components: Cryomodule, Cavities, RF items (Couplers, tuners, …), cryogenicsequipment… • Assembly (withadequatetools): cavities string in clean room, inclusion in cryomodule • Tests: cavities in vertical cryostat, assembledcryomodule in bunker. • Experience in SC RF cavitiestechnology • Fabrication and processing • Test, diagnostics and analysis • Upgrade of the SM18 infrastructure • Cryogenics for efficient operationat 2K • High power RF at 704 MHz (klystron, modulator, high power distribution) • LowLevel RF and controls 9

  10. OUTLINE • Context and organization • Recent progress • Near future… F

  11. Progress since July 2011 (1/2) More detailsduringthis meeting • Construction of 4 cavities in industry • Niobium (finally!) delivered • Fabrication contract signed • Decision to build one additional cavity at CERN in 2012 • Test of single cell sample cavity from CEA • In progress • Measurement and test with dumbbell copper cavity • In progress • Upgrade of cryogenics infrastructure in SM18 • Planned in 2012 • Order of 704 MHz klystron for SM18 • Order signed in September 2011 • Specification & order of klystron modulator from industry (ESS) • Specifications finalized • Supplier selected / order being signed ? • Preparation of 704 MHz RF components (Low Level and High Power) for SM18 • In progress More information on Friday 11

  12. Progress since July 2011 (2/2) • Review of Cryomodule Conceptual Design on November 4, 2011 • (Late but) done - https://indico.cern.ch/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=154284 • Construction & test of High power RF couplers + Review • Couplers and coupling boxes built, but problem with Cu-platting • High power RF tests started in Saclay • Review delayed to the first quarter of 2012 • Specification & construction of tuners and He tanks (CEA) • Delayed • LP-SPL CDR (jointly with PS2) • Delayed to 2012… • Organization of future meetings • Changed into “SLHiPP” open collaboration events • December 2011 meeting organized (CERN) / May 2012 meeting announced (Italy) More detailsduringthis meeting 12

  13. OUTLINE • Context and organization • Recent progress • Near future… F

  14. Next 12 months (1/2) … concerning the SPL itself (non-exhaustive list): • Update of the integrated planning taking into account the impact of the other CERN programmes • Follow-up of cavities construction (in industry and at CERN) and first tests… • Start of upgrade of cryogenics and overall infrastructure in SM18 • Tests of High power RF couplers + Review (Q1/2012) • Follow-up of klystron modulator construction in industry (ESS)… • Order of RF components for SM18 • Beginning of construction of prototype cryomodule (IN2P3) • Construction of He tanks (CEA) • LP-SPL CDR (jointly with PS2) • SLHiPP-2 meeting (3-4 May, 2012) 14
