  1. Environmental Science IV Senior Project

  2. WHY? The Purpose behind “Senior Project” • REAL WORLD PREPARATION! It’s scary out there. • CONTRIBUTE! Use your science education to give back! • The WMAES school board requires Environmental Science 4 be passed by those students expecting to graduate – You did want that high school diploma, correct?

  3. Why YOU should look forward to your SENIOR PROJECT: For the first time in your high school “career” YOU call ALL of the shots. You control WHAT you learn and HOW you learn it! You don’t want homework? Then don’t give yourself homework!

  4. What Do I Have to Do? • ES 4consists of three major components: • An 8-10 page Research Paper • Field Work (also called the Physical Aspect) • A Formal Presentation

  5. The Research Paper • College professors are amazed by the inability of college freshmen to produce a decent research paper. Do not let this be you – it is embarrassing. • Your research paper will follow APAformat. • Your research paper will be 8-10 pages long. • You will learn to use credible sources. • Your research paper will be an accomplishment that you will be proud of.

  6. Field Work • “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” – Chinese Proverb • A minimum of 10 hours is required for full credit. • Field work may be done in a variety of ways: • Job Shadowing • Unpaid Internship • Volunteer Work • Interviewing Professionals • Touring Facilities • Independent Hands-On Research

  7. Presentation • “You have all the confidence you will ever need inside of you. It may be hidden deep – you must give yourself the permission to let it out.” • - George Torok • When? This May. • Who? Your audience will consist of school board members, staff, your families, and friends. • How Long? No less than 8 minutes and no more than 10 minutes. • How? PowerPoint presentation • Secondary supporting visual aid

The 2 Trimesters of ES4 • Fall • Focus: • Choosing a Problem • Conducting Research • Developing an 8-10 page Research Paper • Beginning Field Work (physical aspect) • Spring • Focus: • Continuing Field Work • Developing your formal presentation • Practicing your formal presentation • Delivering your formal presentation ES 4 A ES 4 B

  9. What Will I Do All Winter? • Occasional class meetings with Mrs. Sherman or Mrs. DeYoung (TBA) • Field Work Field Work Field Work!

How will I be Graded? • Homework = 25% of T1 • Deadlines = 25% of T1 • Research Paper = 50% of T1 (this will serve as your T1 exam grade) • Deadlines = 25% of T3 • Field Work= 25% of T3 • This will be divided into CHOICE and HOURS • ProjectChoice = 15% of T3 (consider this during ES IV A) • Presentation = 35% of T3 (this will serve as your T3 exam grade) ES 4 A – First Trimester ES 4 B – Third Trimester

Mentors • Who? • A staff member at WMAES requested by you • Why? • You will want and need more help with ES IV than your teacher of record can provide. • What? • Help with problemchoice, editing your research paper, choosing field work, developing your presentation, etc. • When & Where? • It’s up to you! No less than one meeting/week. • BE CONSISTENT! Same day, Same time.

  14. Project Choice • YOU ARE A SCIENTIST THIS YEAR! You will struggle to pass if you simply spit out regurgitated Google search information. • Discover something new! Something original! Solve your problem! • Have an opinionabout a science related issue and provewhy YOU are RIGHT!

Projects from the Past • Organic Farming Practices are Best • A “Greener” WMAES • The Problem with Runoff Pollution • The Physiology of Depression • The Science of Sound • Invasive Species of the Great Lakes • Wind Energy • The Problem with Electronic Waste • Forest Management • Colonizing Space • The Many Environmental Causes of Cancer Which projects do you think would be the best choice? Remember, YOU’RE the scientist.

  16. Problem Based Project New this year! • Think of a scientific problem that NEEDS a solution. • You will be working on researching ways to SOLVE your problem. You’ll need evidence to back it up.

  17. Have Fun! • Final thoughts… For the first time in your high school “career” YOU call ALL of the shots. Youcontrol WHAT you learn and HOW you learn it! Youdon’t want homework? Then don’t give yourself homework! Use your resources (this includes people) and your time wisely and Senior Project will be a breeze!
