Chapter Ten: Section 4 Timeline The System Fails 1859-John Brown’s Raid occurred in which he tried to liberate slaves from the south 1857-small slavery group in Kansas elected members to write the Lecompton Constitution which was proslavery; most of Kansas objected to this 1854-1855-Antislavery groups in the Northeast set up Emigrant Aid societies in which 1200 New Englanders went to Kansas to fight against slavery 1858-Views on slavery were divided after Lecompton Constitution was denounced By 1856-Tensions in Kansas became so bad that open violence began; spread throughout the country By 1855-Kansas’ 2 competing capitals were the antislavery capital in Topeka and a slavery capital in Lecompton Later in 1856-The violence in the country passed and peace was restored March 1857-Supreme Court judged the controversial Dred Scott vs. Stanford case (Slave vs. slave owner) and ruled that the slave did not receive freedom from his owner After 1858-Lincoln and Douglas competed in the Lincoln Douglas Debates Later in 1856-Democrats nominated James Buchanan for president while Republicans chose John C. Fremont
