  1. Castles with Shapes and Color • By Grade 1, Oliver Ellsworth School • This lesson is the final lesson in a large unit on Architecture. Prior to this lesson, they learned about parts of a castle, drew castles, reviewed architectural words like arches, domes, and columns. • For this project…….. • Students learned about the Swiss born artist, Paul Klee. • Students Identified the shapes and colors within his work. • Students were able to use building blocks to build castles of their own. • Students created castles and a sun using blocks, using new concepts like structural balance they made sure to use the shapes from the bottom of the paper and working their way up almost like they were building it brick by brick. • Students were introduced to warm and cool color families. • Students added either cool or warm colors to their pictures. • Students learned ways to create shapes out of paper without • drawing: like folding the paper, or cutting two pieces at a time • to embellish the border of their work in various shapes like • rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, etc. • CONTENT STANDARDS ADDRESSED: • I. Students will understand, select, and apply media, techniques and processes. • II. Students will understand and apply elements and organizational principles. • VI.
