  2. How is a Chaptermanaged?

  3. Once a chapter is established, we suggest that Chair, Secretary and Treasurer positions must be assigned, at least. • IEEE suggest a term of 1 year, we recommend no more than 3 years. • Chair: he/she is responsible and oversee the management of the Chapter, ensure everything is compliant to IEEE rules, suggests lines for improvements • Secretary: is responsible for reporting to IEEE via vtools, keeping update records of the meetings and officer changes; • Treasurer: manage the bank account/funds, connects to the Section if the funds are managed by it, oversees the usage of the funds from GRSS/IEEE

  4. Whatshould Chapters do?

  5. Activities • Ensure that at least two technical meetings are conducted in a calendar year • Recruit other members to let the Chapter grow • Outreach to other communities/companies • Design specific activities for • Senior membership promotion & Fellow nomination • Young Professionals • Women in Geoscience & Minorities • Foster Technical Committees • Make suggestions/support the Globalization Committee

  6. Ranking Matrix for GRSS Chapter Award • # of seminars, # of attendees, DL participation • Technology initiatives, focused technical topic development • Short courses, workshops, tutorials, Open Houses • Development seminars, career advising • # papers at IGARSS per membership capita, sessions organized, conference hosting • Members added, members elevated to Senior/Fellow

  7. Event organization • Three main possibilities: • Regularchapter meeting/seminars. • special lectures for young professionals, hands-on activities (possibly in the field), letting them provide feedback and lead the process. • invited sessions at IGARSS and dedicated GRSS events, as well as local in (national) workshop to share knowledge among remote sensing communities. • Additionally, the organization of national RS Summer Schools is suggested

  8. Connections and outreach • Chapters are encouraged to set up: • e-Newsletter, to provide quick information and links; • a regularly updated website, possibly with a blog and interactive maps of laboratories working on GRS • The Chapter Corner’s reports in the GRS Magazine • Organization of technical visits to university and industry labs, and lectures by industrial speakers. • Active involvement of the Aerospace Agencies.

  9. Funds to chapters • Each Section yearly receives $0.2k for each active Chapter, but often they do not release it (you may ask, though, and we will help). • GRSS has a Chapter budget since this year • We have a call (December) for activities to to be funded towards: • Increasing the IEE GRSS membership (e.g., GRSS-sponsored awards, YP events, …) • Connecting to industrial and local communities (e.g., industry fairs, lectures by industry leaders, …) • Improving education materials (e.g., on-line lectures, materials in local language, …)

  10. Two-direction information flow (in) • The GRSS Chapter Chair, the VP for Professional Activities & the Chapter Committee are available for • linking to IEEE central offices and (hopefully) solving issues • providing updated members’ lists and contact info • putting chapters in contact with other chapters which either experienced similar issues or organized similar activities • Connecting to GRSS DL programs, Globalization Committee, GRSS Strategic initiatives and officials; • suggesting activities and helping to organize them. • Do not hesitate to ask!

  11. Two-direction information flow (out) You are required to report your activities via the IEEE vtools system. You are also required to provide an annual report to GRSS with numbers about membership and activities carried out You can provide a two page/double column report to be printed on the GRS Magazine according to a schedule which is decided for two years in a row.
