  • Gorillas live in tightly knit groups up to the amount of thirty.
  • A dominant male known as a silver back is known for the gray or silver hair on his back.
  • He protects the group which consists of his female mates and their young.

  • Gorillas are most active during the daytime, and gorillas awake early in the morning to forage.
  • After a midday rest, they travel to find their next meal.
  • Before night fall, each gorilla makes a nest, with infants sharing their mother’s leafy nests.

  • Though gorillas spend most of their time on the ground, juveniles and females sometimes nest in trees.
  • Gorillas will also climb trees to search for food.
  • In fact, they have been seen in trees more than 130 feet above ground!

  • Gorillas are plant eaters, feeding primarily on stems , leaves , shoots , and the fleshy fruits of a wide variety of seasonally fruiting trees .
  • Full grown male gorillas eat up to 40 pounds of plant matter per day.
  • Full grown females eat about one-third less.

  • Gorilla babies are born small, at around 4.5 pounds , but they grow fast.
  • At about six months old, a gorilla toddler can walk and ride on it’s mothers back.
  • Baby gorillas stay close to their mothers until they are four to six years old.
