  1. Opinion Making Presentation A study of the life and work of Pablo Picasso

Opinion MakingWhat will you be doing? • This term we are going to study the work of Pablo Picasso. • Picasso is a hard artist to understand, his work can look strange and disturbing. • You will not only be studying Picasso’s paintings but also the world he lived in. • Picasso lived in a time of incredible change and you will be finding out about some of the important events.

Opinion MakingWhat will you be doing? • Towards the end of term you will select FIVE of Picasso’s paintings to go into your own gallery. • You will need to be able to explain WHY you have made your selection. • You will need to have an opinion about Picasso’s work. • You will be marked according to how you present your explanations and opinion.

Your presentation explains, very clearly, why you have chosen your five paintings and your opinion of Picasso’s work. • Merit: You have researched and selected five paintings. Your presentation explains why you have chosen your five paintings and your opinion of Picasso’s work. • Credit: You have researched and selected five paintings. Your presentation explains your opinion of Picasso’s work • Pass: You have researched and selected five paintings and included them into a presentation.

  5. An introduction to the life, timesand work of Pablo Picasso

  6. Early Years • When Picasso was just a young boy his parents recognised that he had an incredible artistic talent. Picasso attended art college from the age of 14 and one of his paintings won a major art prize when he was just 15. Self Portrait painted when he was 15. Science and Charity : Painted when he was 16.

  7. Blue Period • When he was still quite young Picasso left home and moved to Paris. His paintings weren’t selling and he had very little money. His art at this time is quite sad and is painted in cold blues. Self Portrait painted when he was 20. The Tragedy, one of his Blue Period paintings.

  8. Rose Period • After some time in Paris Picasso met a woman and fell in love. His paintings changed and became warmer and less depressing and they started to sell. Picasso’s life improved. Seated Harlequin. Picasso started to paint circus folk and acrobats in his Rose Period. He used much warmer colours, reds and oranges.

  9. African Period • Picasso became fascinated with African sculpture, masks in particular. He was excited by their exotic simplicity and he used them to inspire his portraits.

  10. Experiments • Picasso could paint realistically with almost no effort. He needed new challenges. He began to experiment with different styles. He would study other artists, copy their style and add something of his own. Absinthe Drinker 1901 : Pablo Picasso Night Cafe 1888 : Paul Gauguin

  11. Cubism • Picasso and fellow artist Georges Braque started to explore a new way of painting. They started to combine different viewpoints into the same painting. The style became known as Cubism. Guitar and Mandolin 1924: Pablo Picasso. Still Life 1932: Georges Braque

  12. Collage • With Georges Braque, Picasso invented collage. It’s hard to imagine, but they were among the first artists to think of making images by sticking things to the canvas.

  13. To begin with.... • Take a look at the interactive Picasso gallery. The paintings range from his very earliest works to the last paintings he did. • Spend some time looking at his paintings and then, using word, write a paragraph about what you think of his work. • This will be your initial opinion about Picasso’s work. • Create a Picasso folder in your year 9 area and save your opinion with a suitable name.
