  1. Growing in the Prophetic: Dreams and Visions Part One – Who dreams? Part Two – Why and How do we dream? Part Three – Interpreting dreams Part Four – The Ten Percent: Sharing Dreams for Others Part Five - Interpreting dreams in more depth Q and A/Dream Interpretation -

  2. . Part One: Who dreams?

  3. WHAT is a dream or a vision? DREAM or VISION? - Word exegesis. *Acts 2:17. Horasis (vision) – seeing with eyes. Enypniazomai (dream) – metaphorical. • DREAM – Prophecy, word of knowledge, gift of discernment, gift of healing, gift of wisdom, gift of interpretation, renewing of the mind. ? All of these are part and parcel of dreaming! a) Solomon was given wisdom in a dream, he woke up and wrote Proverbs. b) Peters wrong mind set shifted in a dream (*Acts 10:14-16). NB how similar this is to what we might dismiss as a pizza dream!! c) Foretelling – Abraham's dream of his descendants going into slavery in egypt – *Gen 15:13) “Then the LORD said to him, "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years” d) *Acts 9:10-18 – Saul and Ananias. ,

  4. 0 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” •    “Yes, Lord,” he answered. • 11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” • 13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” • 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” • 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized”

  5. Part Two: Why and How do we dream?

  6. WHY DO WE DREAM? • 1. The process of dreaming, recording and praying into our dreams builds RELATIONSHIP with Father God. • The primary purpose of our existence – relationship with God. • John 15 – He calls us friends. • 'no longer do i call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but i have called you friends, for all things that i heard from My Father I have made known to you'. • 2. The process of dreaming, recording and praying into our dreams gives GLORY • Hidden for his glory and for ours. Prov 25:2. • (NIV) “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings” • (NLT) “It is God's privilege to conceal things and the king's privilege to discover them” • (KJV) “It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter” • 3. PRACTICALITY • Job 33: 14-18 - “For God speaks not only once but more than once, even though men do not regard it, in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men while slumbering upon the bed, then He opens the ears of men and seals their instruction, that he may withdraw man from hi s purpose and cut off pride from him. He holds him back from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

  7. WHY DO WE DREAM? THE GLORIOUS NATURE OF OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM Because he has chosen and declared over this earth that it is his will for co-laboring with His children. Dominion over the earth was given to Adam and to Adam's descendants. We are involved in every stage of the way!! This is why stewarding, honouring and applying your dreams are so important – He will often wait for us and use us!! Amos 3:7 “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets”. FUN!!

  8. HOW DO WE DREAM? 1. ASK! James Goll – “You are a seer if you want and ask to be one”. *Mathew 7:11 “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” *Mathew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” 3. Steward your sleep– Bill Johnson on Supernatural Sleep (Bethel Podcast or www.ibethel.org) 4. Pray before you sleep. Give God your sleep, ask for dreams, for His presence to surround you, for encounters with His love, for deeper revelation of Him in the night and for protection over you sleep and you dreams. 5. Faith – pencil and paper. Put both of them by your bed before sleep. Faith Is the currency of heaven (Bill Johnson). 30 second principle - Ask Holy Spirit “Have I dreamed this night?” Write it down straight away! Before you even get out of bed! and grey sleep principle.

  9. Part 3: Interpreting Dreams

  10. INTERPRETING DREAMS: THE THEORYGod given gift or developed gift? 1. Inadequacy of the world's methods. Freud and Young. 2. From God: Gen 40:8 • "We both had dreams," they answered, "but there is no one to interpret them." Then Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams." • Daniel 2:20 ff and Daniel 2:27-28: “Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries 3. But we can grow in it too! (hence why we are having this session today!) Daniel 1:17- “To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds” Proverbs 25:2

  11. INTERPRETING DREAMS: THE THEORY: dream source Source – guidelines (not rules!) 1. 1st Heaven (God) - Light – Colour – Biblical (eg ‘Worshipping with the angels’ dream) - Smells of heaven. Hopeful!! 2. 2nd Heaven (Enemy) - Muted, Grayscale, colourless, night time, doesn’t feel like heaven! (eg chasing dreams) - (Discern the difference between nightmares and warning dreams) - Confusing (NB not ‘yet to be interpreted’!) John 14:6 (Way, Truth, Light) vs John 8:44 (He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.). 3 .You. (eg ‘Ottoman exam’ (gibberish), factual about us (element or whole dream) or ‘false dreams’. Jeremiah. Marriage.) • Soul dreams. Word of knowledge? • - Chemical/body dreams Can it be a mixture? Eg Holy Spirit hijacking the end of a dream!

  12. INTERPRETING DREAMS: Recording Dreams • Writing or speaking. (iphone app…or pen and paper!) • My number system – 2010.Feb.1 – “Angel instruction”

  13. INTERPRETING DREAMS: The practical bit Map the dream – Focus/Subfocus/Detail 1. Ask Holy Spirit. This is continuous throughout the process! Spirit check. 2. Who or what is the Focus of the dream? 90% of dreams concern us. • Who is the subject/focus? Are you in the dream or just observing?(eg General Europe dream) 3. Find 3-5 subfocus (ie the dream wouldn’t really make sense without it!) 4. What about the details? This are just ‘colour’. i.e. they add, confirm or detail the other symbols. Interpret the dream 1. First scene principle – the first scene often shows us the context of the dream 2. Is the focus symbolic or literal? 3. Are the subfocuses/foci symbolic or literal? Understanding symbolism? a. Biblical b. Cultural c. Personal 4. What is God’s Purpose behind the dream or What could God saying (therefore what do I do)? (Hint:) (Hint number two: It will align with your gift and callling! )

  14. INTERPRETING DREAMS: The practical bit (Hint: It will align with your gift and calling!) Paul the apostle: Apostolic and leadership role. He often dreamt in this realm. Acts 16:9-10 “During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.” The evangelistically minded of us will dream more in this realm Joseph, as a father, received instruction in dreams and visions on looking after his son. Etc etc This can help us understand our dreams more when we know it will match (or be in the context of) both our giftings (thematic – i.e. pastoral, apostolic etc) and our calling (situational – i.e. worship leader, friend, father, accountant). We all operate in more than one sphere i.e. you can be a mother, a wife, a friend of others, a business owner etc all at the same time) (For the scholarly inclined have a look at Paul’s use of the Greek word ‘metron’)

  15. DEMONSTRATION DREAM:Suggested method – spider diagram or mind map1. Put the focus of the dream in the middle (usually us!)2. Branch off from that the key subfocus, events in the dream. Keep them to 3-53. You can add to these main symbols more arrows and words to add detail etc if you want.4. Then in a different colour write by each symbol/event what it could mean (think biblically, personally and culturally)

  16. Wise stewarding of dreams “Beloved do not believe every spirit but test the spirits to see if they are from God” Principle of relationship. Example of two-horse wedding. CORE PRINCIPLES of stewarding dreams (and the prophetic) 1. Share with your mentor/friend/family 2. Every correct interpretation is Biblical 3. Gods Love for us is the centre of every thing 4. Don't sell your house. “not once but twice”. He will confirm. Potential Nature of Dreams – dreams are 'potential'. They talk of possibilities, promises and reveal the heart of our Father. In the same way 'bad' dreams are often revealed to us so that they DO NOT need to come to pass. We pray for the opposite! They need us to process with them, pursue what they have revealed with intention, prayer and direction. And most importantly with mentors, friends and family (and Holy Spirit!).

  17. Part 4: The Ten Percent – Sharing Dreams for Others. Generally 1/10 of our dreams are for others. A good way of knowing the focus is not us can be that we are not 'involved' in the dream, we are 'observing' someone or something (as if watching a movie). There are exceptions to this but generally this is a good indication!

  18. Most dreams of others are simply for us to pray. If we want to share the dream with them, use wisdom, discernment and guidance from Holy Spirit. • It is best to treat it as you would ministry as a whole. Ensure it is non-threatening for the recipient (i.e. dont take them into a back room!). Sharing in the presence of others is very important. They can keep the person accountable and it honours the person we are sharing the dream with. • Above all rememember: • The two-fold calling: • “Love the lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind” • “Love you neighbour as yourself”. (Luke 10:26 ff)).

  19. Keys to help us interpret more accurately and share more powerfully • “May God give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better” (Eph. 1:17) • UNDERSTAND GOD'S NATURE!! Graham Cooke. Youtube him and “nature of god” • God is: • Primarily – Good, Kind, Faithful, Loving • Never – Embarrassing, condemning or confusing. • Conviction: It is not normally our role to bring this to others, even if the lord has shown us areas they are struggling in. So this is more relevant to our understanding of our own dreams: • Often we are tempted to use the word 'convict' to describe what really should be condemning. God is good, faithful, loving and SO VERY KIND! THAT is what conviction looks like! A good indication that it is conviction (not condemnation) is that we come away feeling more hopeful, happier, more loved than before. We will feel closerto our Father and sense his arms around us more than before! Conviction draws us into an encounter with His goodness, His grace, His kindness and His love for us.

  20. Interpreting/Presenting dreams for others Present with a wise and mature heart. Carry Love for the person at the heart of what you do and say. - Honour them - Even if you have the right dream, for the right person, in the right season...but you dont have the right motivation...dont give it. - Avoid situations that put you in power, control or position. Ways of presenting dreams (or the prophetic) 1. “Does this mean anything to you?” 2. “I feel like the Lord might be saying...” 3. “THUS SAYETH THE LORD!”
