  9. “teachers assess the quality of learning objects by asking themselves how they would teach the same concepts offline, whether it’s practical and whether children would still learn at their own pace and gain the same depth of understanding” • Carolyn McCabe The Education Channel • EQ Winter 2006

  10. The Object? Learning! Article EQ • ..“it is as convincing a demonstration as you could wish for of the value of the computer-based learning objects to complement and enhance mainstream learning..” • ..”they’re too good not to use..” • Objects used …Wishball, Life of a Platypus, Sludge Machine, Rap Machine, Frog Pond David McRae Visiting Tongala PS EQ Spring 2005

  11. Accessing Digilearn Objects & Resources: Different paths into Digilearn give different ideas. Access path 1: Digilearn Homepage http://www.education.vic.gov.au/digilearn https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr Access path 2: Showcase of teachers’ uses of diglearn http://epotential.education.vic.gov.au/showcase Access path 3: Searching through education site for the suggested uses of digilearn eg maths & science continua http://www.education.vic.gov.au/ search “Digilearn” Access path 4. How digilearnobjects can be integrated in rich and engaging units of learning. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/teacher/Webactivities/

  14. Further resources • The following resources contain sections that may be useful when designing learning experiences: • DigiLearn * • Human Body – students work through a series of four learning objects about the structure and function of the human body. They compare humans with other animals to explore adaptation to environments.(http://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr/_layouts/dlr/Details.aspx?ID=3286) • * Note that Digilearn is a secure site; DEECD login required. • Further resources • The following resources contain sections that may be useful when designing learning experiences: • DigiLearn * • Human Body – students work through a series of four learning objects about the structure and function of the human body. 17. Further resources • The following resources contain sections that may be useful when designing learning experiences: • Digilearn * • Body Parts: digestive system – students take a journey through the human digestive system. They find out how food is moved around, broken down and absorbed, and wastes excreted. They learn what enzymes are and which organs release them.(http://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr/_layouts/dlr/Details.aspx?ID=3226) • * Note that Digilearn is a secure site; DEECD login required.

  18. Discussion:How would you use interactives in units and in class? Brainstorm ideas in small groups. 1. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

  19. Access path 3: education.vic.gov.au and Search “Digilearn”

  20. How do I use them in the classroom?** You can use digital learning objects to: 1. integrate into a sequence of student learning activities, including regular classroom activities away from the computer 2. facilitate instruction of commonly taught concepts, applications and skills from basic to more complex 3. simulate concepts and practices difficult to replicate in school classrooms because of safety, time and cost 4. allow for self-paced learning and opportunities for students to revisit and revise content and skills 5. cater for different student learning modes and abilities foster ICT skill development 6. stimulate the imagination of teachers and students to create their own learning objects

  21. Digilearn: research & units

  22. Unit plans incorporating DLOs • http://www.education.vic.gov.au/studentlearning/teachingresources/ict/learnobj.htm • See units • Unit Plan: Fishy Business (PDF - 579KB) (PDF - 576Kb) • Unit Plan: The Good Life (PDF - 131KB) (PDF - 128Kb) • Unit Plan: People Power (PDF - 318KB) (PDF - 314Kb)

  23. Looking at the units 1. How have teachers used the learning objects to complement other teaching approaches ? What role do learning objects play in these unit plans? 2. How have other ICTs been used? 3. What other teaching approaches are incorporated?

  24. Unit Plan structure used • Essential Question • Content/Skills Questions • Unit Summary • Teaching & Learning Strategies • Professional Learning • VELS • Procedures and T&L Sequence

  25. 3. ICT domain - Learning & teaching support

  26. Digilearn search ..cont • Maths and Science Continuum many links. • Try any of the links and see how Digilearn may be included to teach to the maths and Science continua.

  27. Maths continuum • Further Resources • Digilearn object * • The array – students use an array-building tool to help solve multiplications. Students learn strategies to break up multiplications. Students create and solve easy multiplications, eg 9x3. Students learn relationships between rows, columns and areas in arrays.(https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr/_layouts/dlr/Details.aspx?ID=4908) • Pobble arrays: find a factor – students help creatures to line up and walk through gates. Students make equal rows and columns. For example, predict how many equal rows of pobbles are needed to fit 12 of them through four gates. (https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr/_layouts/dlr/Details.aspx?ID=4496) • Arrays: worded problems with products from 10 to 30 – students read a number problem and think about how to solve it. For example, when 13 is divided by a number, the answer is 6 with a remainder of 1. Students write the problem as a multiplication or division number sentence with a missing number. (https://www.eduweb.vic.gov.au/dlr/_layouts/dlr/Details.aspx?ID=4499)

  30. http://www.education.vic.gov.au/teacher/Webactivities/ • Your task: • Browse in the various areas of Digilearn, use your template to collect objects that you will use in Term 2 or perhaps later as well. • Home page of Digilearn- use VELS as a means to find suitable learning objects and resources. • Webactivities as excellent ideas for rich integration. • Showcase for outstanding learning objects • Search….Digilearn, other ways to tie into Maths and Science continua.

  32. Electronic whiteboards • Belinda Hudson (Yuille Park) very graciously sent me a list of links to resources for interactive whiteboards.  With her permission I have taken those links, added some more and created a Delicious Social Bookmarking site and organised the links according to a variety of criteria hopefully making it a little easier to use. • (Graeme Oswin, Ultranet Coach, Ballarat • The site can be found at:  http://del.icio.us/grampiansIWB
