  1. A RADIATION SHIELDING SIMULATION FOR BESSY FEL e- DUMP SYSTEM Ercan Pilicer, Ilhan Tapan, Nilgun Demir UludagUnivesity Physics Department Bursa-Turkey

  2. UYEF Contents • BESSY FEL • e- dump system • Radiation environment • FLUKA (A Multi-particle Transport Code) • e- dump simulation • Future works • Remarks & Conclusions

  3. UYEF BESSY FEL 1.7 GeV e- energy, 240 m circumference Synchrotron ring BESSY FEL

  4. UYEF BESSY FEL Electron and photon energies

  5. UYEF e- dump system BESSY FEL e- dump layout

  6. UYEF Radiation environment Different products resulting from electron-nucleus interactions; Gamma rays by high energy electron hitting on vacuum system component or colliding with the residual gas nuclei Neutrons by photons from bremsstrahlung or from EM cascade in nucleus interaction Protons by nuclear interactions, but small in range when compared to neutrons Muons by pair production from photons having a starting energy of 212 MeV

  7. UYEF FLUKA(A Multi-particle Transport Code) FLUKA is a general purpose tool for calculations of particle transport and interactions withmatter, covering an extended range of applications; Proton and electronaccelerator shielding, target design, calorimetry, activation, dosimetry, detector design,Accelerator Driven Systems, cosmic rays, neutrino physics, radiotherapy etc. In general no programming is required except in the case of special user requirements via user routines written in Fortran77 Free to download from www.fluka.org

  8. UYEF e- dump simulation Construct geometry in 3 ways; SimpleGEO (3D viewer) ALIFE (2D viewer) FlukaGUI (2D viewer)

  9. UYEF e- dump simulation Some physical processes included; By default (SHIELDIN) but can be overwritten EM interactions (EMF) Photo-nuclear interactions (PHOTONUC) Particle threshold (PART-THR) Low energy neutrons (LOW-NEUT) Output and scoring by; SCORE (ALL-PART, PHOTON, ENERGY, EM-ENRGY) USERWEIG (conversion factors) USRBIN (fluence & energy deposition) USERDUMP (define a collision tape) USRICALL (user dependent initialisation)

  10. UYEF e- dump simulation Gamma dose rate in Sv/h for 40 MeV e- @ 2 mA

  11. UYEF e- dump simulation Neutron dose rate in Sv/h for 40 MeV e- @ 2 mA

  12. UYEF e- dump simulation By modifying some user routines, coordinates for boundary crossing particles in the barrel body gammas neutrons
