  1. P I l g r I m Turkey Day What It Means To Be Thankful !

  2. A Special Day To Give Thanks • It is a North American Holiday • It started as a form of Harvest Festival • 1st record was San Augustine Florida September 8th 1565. • Best known recorded event was at Plymouth Plantation in 1621 • Celebrated 2nd Monday in October – Canada • 4th Thursday in United States

  3. Thanks for what? • Material and Spiritual possessions • Not based on any religious or pagan holidays • It is remembered for the early colonist deliverance by the Native Americans after a brutal winter in Plymouth Massachusetts • The Wampanoag tribe taught the pilgrims how to catch eel and grow corn • They set aside a day to show their thankfulness

  4. The Early Settlers Had …..... • Plenty of water fowl • Many Turkeys • Much Venison • Lots of Fish like cod and bass • Indian Corn from which they made meal • They wrote back to England of how prosperous this new land was

  5. Is life all about food and shelter • In 1623, they were in a drought and prayed for rain and received one and they established a true “Thanksgiving Day” • By the 1700’s almost every colony had established a “Thanksgiving Day” to celebrate God’s manifold blessings. • Today we may have lost site of the true meaning of this holiday, not just a feast

  6. Today we often forget to be thanful • 1 Chron 16:34 Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! • 1 Chron 16:8 Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; Make known His deeds among the peoples! • Ps 75:1 We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks !

  7. Today we often forget to be thanful • Ps 79:13 So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture, Will give You thanks forever; We will show forth Your praise to all generations. • Ps 107:8-9 Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 9 For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness

  8. For What Should We Be Thanful • Rom 16:4 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, 4 who risked their own necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks , but also all the churches of the Gentiles. • 2 Cor 2:14-16 Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. 15 For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life.

  9. For What Should We Be Thanful • 2 Cor 9:10-15 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, 11 while you are enriched in everything for all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 12 For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God, 13 while, through the proof of this ministry, they glorify God for the obedience of your confession to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal sharing with them and all men, 14 and by their prayer for you, who long for you because of the exceeding grace of God in you. 15 Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

  10. How thankful should we be? 2 Tim 3:2-5 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful , unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

  11. How thankful should we be? 2 Tim 3:6-9 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. 8 Now as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, disapproved concerning the faith; 9 but they will progress no further, for their folly will be manifest to all, as theirs also was.

  12. How thankful should we be? Eph 5:3-4 But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4 neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks

  13. P I l g r I m Turkey Day Art Thou Thankful !
