  2. Background • DfID funded through FAO • Compliments government livestock drought mitigation program • Targeting worst drought affected districts of Mangwe, Matobo, Gwanda, Beitbridge, Zvishavane, Chiredzi, Mwenezi and Mberengwa FAO Zimbabwe

  4. KEY FEATURES OF PROJECT • Implemented in partnership with MAMID and 4 NGOs. • Livestock Development Associations (LDA) (AMHC based) to be set up to assist with program management • Disease control: Provision of FMD and Anthrax Vaccine • Water: Borehole rehabilitation FAO Zimbabwe

  5. Key features - contd • Survival/Suplementary Feeding: Targets breeding females – +/-3/HH • Feed sold at 50% of cost • Money generated to be managed by LDA in consultation with FAO, IP and technical guidance from MAMID FAO Zimbabwe

  6. KEY FEATURES contd • Money generated to be used for • Drugs/vaccines for livestock • Repair/maintenance of livestock-related infrastructure • Rehabilitation of water points. • Fodder bank development • Establishment and strengthening of LDAs with special emphasis on capacitation FAO Zimbabwe

  7. PROGRESS TO DATE • LoA signed (or in process) with NGOs • 13 500 MT of feed procured • Feed moved to district warehouses • Vaccines ordered • Sales expected to start next week FAO Zimbabwe
