  1. Welcome to Fifth Grade Back-to-School Night • South School • Thursday, September 20th 2012 • 7:00 P.M.

  2. Expectations • Attendance - school begins promptly at 8:25 A.M. • Appropriate Clothing- dress for the weather • Hygiene - encourage showering and deodorant • Classroom Rules- an agreement made by all • Handbook- Guidelines for all students

  3. Homework Policy • Approximately 50 minutes each night • Expected to complete and return all assignments to fifth grade quality • Nightly reading will be expected • Review of math facts is encouraged

  4. Grading Rubric • 4 Exceeding the grade level standard. Producing quality work consistently. • 3 Meeting the grade level standard and producing quality work. • 2 Progressing toward the standard. Producing the required grade level work with teacher direction and assistance. • 1 Beginning to develop the standard. Not yet able to produce required grade level work.

  5. Anticipated Activities • Student Council Election • Field Trip into Boston • South School Field Day • Fifth Grade Field Day • OMS Orientation • Moving On Ceremony ( last day of school)

  6. Reading Street • Skills and Strategies vary weekly • Spelling/Grammar • Vocabulary/ Word Study • Fluency • Comprehension • Walk to Read Groupings • Variety of Genres

  7. Envision Mathematics • Textbooks • Access to lessons and support from home ( students will have a log-in) • Builds on prior knowledge • Math Fact Shark Attack • Open Response Questions ( QFPS)

  8. Social Studies with Miss Pires • Government • Explorers • Colonial America • Triangle Trade • Revolutionary War • Mapping

  9. Science With Miss Gabriels • Weather and Water • Heat, Light, Sound, Magnetic Energy • Electricity • Simple Machines • Review of Plants, Animals, Rocks, and Layers of the Earth in preparation for MCAS in May
