PHASE CHANGES Notes: ENDOTHERMIC CHANGES
What is a phase change? A physical change from one state of matter (solid, liquid, or gas) to another.
What does “endothermic” mean? • HEAT ENTERS
What is an endothermic phase change? 1. A phase change that happens when energy ENTERS or is ABSORBED by particles. Melting, vaporization, and sublimation are all ENDOTEHRMIC phase changes. 2. Particles may MOVE FASTER or SEPARATEbut the identity of the particles stay the SAME.
What is melting? • Melting is when a SOLID turns into a LIQUID. • Ex. an ice cube melting into water.
What is vaporization? • Vaporization is when a LIQUID turns into a GAS. • Ex. boiling water or a puddle drying up
What are the two types of vaporization? • BOILING (BUBBLES) • Particles WITHINthe liquid turn into a gas. • EVAPORATION (NO BUBBLES) • Particles AT THE SURFACE turn into a gas.
What is sublimation? • Sublimation is when a SOLIDturns directly into a GAS. • Ex. dry ice turning into carbon dioxide vapors.
Describe melting, vaporization, and sublimation. SOLID LIQUID GAS VAPORIZATION MELTING Sublimation
Do all substances melt and boil at the same temperature? • NO! Every substance has a unique melting and boiling point. Substances with HEAVIERparticles melt/boil at higher temperatures. Substances with particles that are TIGHTLY CONNECTEDmelt/boil at higher temperatures, too.
