  16. 18th AMENDMENT • 1919—18TH AMENDMENT– STOPPED THE SELL OF ALCOHOL

  17. TR’s Square Deal • 3 C’s • Control of corporations • Consumer protection • Conservation of natural resources • Coal miners strike in PA— • TR used big stick—threatened to seize control of mine • Compromise—10% pay increase & 9 hr work day

  18. TR Corrals the Corporations • Interstate Commerce Commission -1887-not working well • Roosevelt the “Trust Buster”—wanted to stop monopolies on key products • Taft busted more trusts than TR

  19. Caring for the Consumer • The Jungle— showed terrible conditions in packing houses • Wanted to focus on workers—instead focused on unsanitary food products • Meat Inspection Act of 1906 • Pure Food and Drug Act 1906
