Lesson 1:. What is Matter?. This matter and energy is continually being changed and transferred throughout Earth and the Universe. Everything on our planet, and in the entire Universe is made up of matter and energy. Matter can be defined as anything that has mass and takes up space.

  1. Lesson 1: What is Matter?

  2. This matter and energy is continually being changed and transferred throughout Earth and the Universe. Everything on our planet, and in the entire Universe is made up of matter and energy.

  3. Matter can be defined as anything that has mass and takes up space.

  4. Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object or substance. • An object’s mass is measured in grams (g).

  5. Volume is the amount of space that an object or substance takes up. • An object’s volume is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or milliliters (mL).

  6. Discovery Education Video: What is Matter? Defines matter as any substance that has mass and occupies space. The segment reveals the composition of matter, describes different ways to measure matter, and showcases the four states of matter.

  7. Matter can exist in three states, or forms: • Solid • Liquid • Gas
