  2. What does in-year mean? A child that joins a school after the usual start date or key stage transfer A key stage transfer: Infant to Junior School Junior to Secondary School Primary to Secondary School Secondary to Studio School

  3. Who is the admission authority? The majority of schools are their own ‘admission authority’ As such each school is responsible for receiving & processing an admission application. Every secondary school in B&NES is their own admission authority.

  4. How do parents find a school place? • Every school has a website – a school’s admission policy is published • Important that parents complete an in-year admission application • Completion of the application will start a timeline and provide parents with vital information of how to appeal if necessary.

  5. Can a school make conditions? • A school cannot make an offer of a school placement conditional. • A school should not ‘interview’ the child prior to an offer of a placement. • A school should not delay making an offer of a placement. • If the school has a vacancy a child is entitled to receive an offer.

  6. Fair Access or not Fair Access? On receipt of an admission application a school can request that the application is dealt with by way of fair access if it meets the fair access criteria. To meet this criteria a child must be without a registered school place with evidence of significant behaviour and/or attendance concern from previous school.

  7. How can you help? • Check that a child has a school place • If child is without education ask questions about what the parent has done to secure a place • Help with finding the admission application for the school and if requested by parent or if you are aware of adult literacy difficulties offer to complete the details. • Make more than one application – the more schools that can be applied to the shorter the time a child may be out of education. • A school may respond to the application without an offer of a placement; support parent with an admission appeal.
