  1. Renewable Energy Supply Chain Opportunities Helping businesses access the commercial opportunities in the supply chain of the new and renewable energy marketplace. Provides a range of support activities focussed on market intelligence, innovation, and diversification. David Terry www.resco.org.uk d.terry@staffs.ac.uk 01782 294110

  2. The RESCO Programme Background and rationale • Build on the existing manufacturing and engineering skills in the Region. • UK renewable energy market - £31.1 billion (2007/8). Projected growth: 7.61% in 2011/2 (Innovas, 2009) • UK national target for renewable energy - 15% by 2020 • Funded by Advantage West Midlands • Duration: October 2009 – March 2014 • Managed by the Institute for Environmental Sustainability and Regeneration (IESR) – Staffordshire University

  3. Renewables 2011 In the news........ • “91 per cent growth for UK wind energy employment” (RUK 1/2/11) • “PM announces £60m to establish offshore wind manufacturing at ports”(N.10 25/10/10 ) • “Siemens chooses Hull for wind turbine plant generating 700 jobs (Guardian 20/1/11) • “UK leads world in offshore wind capacity (20/1/11 Newnet)

  4. The RESCO Programme Technology areas • Power Generation and Transmission • Grid Connection – Large and Small Scale • Efficient Energy Transmission Technology • Energy Conversion and Storage • Key Markets  Component Supply, Technical Innovation, Installation • Wind and Marine Power • Round 3 offshore wind development + STW, 1&2 extensions  47GW by 2020 (The Crown Estate, 2010) (~9400 offshore wind turbines) • Components, logistics, O&M and professional services

  5. The RESCO Programme Technology areas • Bioenergy • Biofuels: Bio-crops, waste wood, biowaste • Anaerobic Digestion, pyrolysis • Waste separation and transport, plant operation, component manufacture, planning, legal service, training etc. • Small Scale Renewables • Solar thermal, PV, GSHP and ASHP, small scale wind and hydro, micro CHP. • Manufacture, Installation, planning, consultancy, modelling

  6. The RESCO Programme Support Process • RESCO is for companies with REAL capability and opprtunities in renewables. • Market Intelligence – working within major markets to access and develop requirements • Technical Development Groups • 1-1 Support • Networks and Events • Access R & D • Skills COMPANY CONTACTS • INITIAL ENGAGEMENT • Capability Assessment • Client engagement summary Power Generation and Transmission Wind and Marine Bioenergy Small scale renewables Scoping visit On-care support Development Groups Eligibility assessment and referral Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technologies

  7. RESCO - What is Different? • Supply Chain Support programme for Businesses based in the UK West Midlands. • RESCO is NOT about general advice • RESCO Model is to engage directly with the Market developers • Offshore Wind Developer /Tier 1 / Tier 2 • Local Authority Energy From Waste Schemes • Housing Retro Fit • Using this knowledge allows: • Company Specific Market Research - benchmarking • Identify key market opportunities for WM Companies • Identification of key barriers to growth or entry into each market sector • Skills needs, Quality Standards, Information access etc.

  8. Some Key Partnerships .... • Key Partnerships • Birmingham City Council – Birmingham Energy Savers / Aim High • Converteam • Alstom Grid • Eon • Stoke City Council • The Crown Estate / DECC – Member of National Offshore Wind Supply Chain Committee • Support • Access to industry Specialists – University and Support Framework • Placements • KTPs • RESEARCH • Wardell Armstrong, Optimat, Quadcom, Encraft, MEA,

  9. Development Groups

  10. Offshore Wind Opportunties for the Midlands • Round 3 Offshore Wind - Supply Chain Conference 2011 • National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull February 16th 2011 • Working with DECC and The Crown Estate • Key Developers and Tier 1 /2 Industry Representatives • Eon • Alstom Grid • Siemens Transmission and Distribution • Repower UK Ltd. • Converteam Ltd, • Mitsubishi Power Systems Europe Ltd. • See event report at www.resco.org.uk

  11. Variety of Opportunities

  12. Small Scale Renewables • RESCO supporting Birmingham Energy Savers project to develop local supply chain. • 200,000 houses by 2026 • Initial commitment of £100m of capital • install Efficiency and Renewables measures 10-20,000 houses • Supply Chain Opportunities and Employment is key objective

  13. Roll out programme – 200,000 houses by 2026 Houses/pa End of BES 3 Year

  14. Supply Chain - analyse the measures With thanks to Shap “Community Green Deal” and Urbed 16

  15. Supply Chain – break down

  16. What is Bio Energy? • UK generates millions of tonnes of organic waste each year • Bio Energy Processes • Anaerobic digestion- Biological processes to break down biomass producing CH4 and “digestate”

  17. Bio Energy Supply Chain opportunities • Investors, financiers and developers   •  Manufacturers of materials, components and integrated systems   •  Construction industry and building trades   •  Landowners, farmers and growers •  Professional services sectors •  Waste industry •  Infrastructure engineers and many more

  18. Bio-Energy – Variety of Opportunities

  19. Summary • Diversification and Development of Local Supply base • Renewable Energy Sector growing by 9% pa • Wind Sector 13% capacity increase p.a. and growing • Focus on Key Market Opportunities e.g. Crown Estates • Planning and Communities • Key drive for Technologies • Localism and Communities • Impact of deployment of Renewable Energy Technologies • RESCO Framework of Support • Framework of Supplier and University Expertise available as a procured support team. • Website and Market engagement methodology • Network and Market Engagement
