  7. CAR Overview Main Challenges • Finding a talented, dedicated webmaster • Acquiring and maintaining email addresses • Managing officers who don’t perform • Collecting dues (younger classes)

  8. CAR Best Practices Communication Tools • Include input from students • Use surveymonkey.com, which is easy and impactful for selecting an AC rep, for getting classmate input and for recruiting volunteers • Use Freeconferencecall.com for regular meetings • Create separate listservs to tailor interest levels • Promote a mission statement or a theme

  9. CAR Best Practices Newsletters • Getting it done • Use guest writers • Select co-editors • Send out mini electronic versions (no formatting required) • Reach out to classmates rather than waiting for input • Distribution Options • Email an e-version or link to a website (timely, no space restriction) • Possible Topics • Include student input • Reach out to everyone with name starting with “A” • Select an issue for discussion

  10. CAR Best Practices Mini Reunions • Involve students at every opportunity • Plan 30th, 70th birthday parties • Plan 87th day of the year celebrations across the country • Combine officer meetings with mini reunions • Co-sponsor events in smaller regions (‘97-’99)

  11. CAR Best Practices Websites • Keep content current with links • Daily D headlines, web cam on the Green • Personal sites - trips, baby news, weddings • Split listserv and content responsibilities • Use Facebook to link classmates • Use Google Groups or InCircle for class discussions • Send a postcard via snail mail to request email addresses • Request email addresses on the website and include the URL on all class correspondence

  12. CAR Best Practices Connecting with students • Engage your EC in finding new ways to focus on students • Invite students, parents or recent grads to a mini reunion • Include input from students in a newsletter, dues letter or letter from the president • Highlight a student on your website (class project section or elsewhere) • Select and focus on class projects that involve students • Promote the TASTE program • Promote Class Connections when applicable • Encourage classmates to do alumni admissions interviews

  13. CAR Best Practices Suggestions for ‘08-’09 • Include challenges in CAR - great learning opportunity • Consider doing an on-line vote or poll • Add student involvement to goals

  14. CAR Best Practices Open Forum • Share your ideas and challenges

  15. Healthy Class Metrics • Project Goal: to identify whether a class meets expectations or needs additional support • Project Uses • For Alumni Relations and Class Officers Association: focus assistance to classes that fall below standard levels • For Class Presidents: set class goals, benchmark class performance and clarify expectations for officers • Intuitive approach taken to identify key factors • Performance levels derived from CARs • Fluid process that will change over time

  16. Healthy Class Metrics

Healthy Class Metrics How are we doing? ‘07-’08 Performance Overview by Decade • ‘40s continue to impress • ‘50s and ‘60s are the gold standard • Regular meetings, minis (2-3) and newsletters (3-4) • Dues % in the 50 and 60s and DCF % in the 60s • Some ‘70s are very strong, but 4 didn’t file CARs • % Dues in the 30 and 40s • Some have great COW attendance, minis, etc, while some have none • ‘80s are solid • Need 3 newsletters vs. 2 and could boost both dues and DCF participation 10 pts each to be come closer to older classes
