Terminology. Degeneration is the change of a tissue to a less functionally active form. Until recently the syndrome was referred to as Senile Macular Degeneration, a name given to the condition by Haab as early as 1885, the terminological change reflecting contemporary sensibility regarding diseases in ageing populations.
