  19. The Center’s Mission The STEM Center of Excellence at The Citadel is working to prepare students for the 21st century workforce. The Center works to address the critical needs of the region and state and is committed to: Impacting STEM literacy in South Carolina through: Developing and expanding STEM programs for all students. Preparing effective educators of the STEM disciplines. Employing community outreach programs to encourage and stimulate the interest of all students in the STEM disciplines. 19

  20. Citadel Cadets: our cadets engage in internships, outreach programs in K-12 schools, STEM competitions, and teacher professional development Activities. K-12 Schools: Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Two and Four County School Districts. Higher Education: HBCUs, Trident Technical, USC, Clemson, MUSC, Charleston Southern, and others. Industry: Boeing, Google, Life Cycle Engineering, NOAA/SCDNR, Practical Aeronautics, Inc., SAIC, SPAWAR, SC Sea Grant, and others. Non-Profits: The Education Foundation, TIES, Change the Equation, and others. Government: Congressman Clyburn’s Office, SC Commission on Higher Education, SC Department of Education, and others. Our Partners and Who We Serve We partner with P-20 educators and administrators, STEM industry professionals, non-profits, and governmental agencies. 20

Student Opportunities The South Carolina STEM Innovation Expo (April 2012 at The Citadel) Competitions include: • The Terra Ignota Project: An air-, land-, sea- and space-based challenge involving systems engineering, modeling and simulations, and terraforming. • The“STEM Goes Viral” Video Challenge: Students screen and compete with short videos they’ve developed that demonstrate inspirational aspects of STEM. • VariousSTEM “Innovation Challenges”: Students present viable solutions they’ve developed to identified STEM-issues. 27

  28. Lowcountry STEM Collaborative Mission statement (what good for whom?) The Lowcountry STEM Collaborative is a community-wide initiative aimed at strengthening the quality of K-20 STEM education, increasing the number of students pursuing STEM degrees to support the local and national pipeline, and elevating the perception and visibility of STEM.

Our Vision The STEM Center of Excellence at the Citadel will foster: Highly qualified teachers equipped with cutting edge STEM knowledge and 21st century skills who will: Be confident in advancing student learning in STEM. Inspire and prepare students to pursue STEM-related careers. Be better able to prepare our students to be successful in the global economy. Community engagement in achieving STEM literacy for our state. Working in concert with other STEM stakeholders, our unified efforts will enable student and teacher learning across the state.
