  2. About 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability.

  3. Disability on the Rise! • The global estimate for disability is on the rise due to population ageing and the rapid spread of chronic diseases.

  4. Causes of disability…. Disabilities can be caused by congenital problems from birth, chronic health problems like asthma or epilepsy, a sudden or severe illness, an accident, or just a different way that your body functions (like dyslexia or stuttering).

  5. One Home It could happen to you… • Almost everyone will be temporarily or permanently impaired at some point in their life.

  6. Living with a disability is easier when you’ve got the right information and resources   Specialists can provide answers and solutions to people with disabilities to enable them to live life to the fullest.

  7. Your rights Disability discrimination is illegal. Often, however, the able-bodied general public (and employers and businesses) simply have no disability awareness.

  8. Do you know? Someone who uses a wheelchair? Wears glasses? Has difficulty hearing? All these (and many more) are referred to as disabilities. Perhaps a more accurate term would be "different abilities"

  9. Normal Life Every person is different, but most everyone wants to have friends and participate in university and social activities. 

  10. You can help Your friends who have special needs by asking them about how you can best assist them, and by being understanding if they need a little extra time or assistance. With a little help they can generally participate in some way. .

  11. Did you know? Athletes from 49 countries are counting down the hours to the start of the sixth IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport Federation) World Games 2011, which begin in Sharjah on Thursday 1st December 2011.

  12. Did you know? The 10-day Games, coordinated by the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sport Federation, has attracted hundreds of disabled athletes from around the world.

  13. Get Involved Swimming and table tennis will be held here at the American University of Sharjah.
