(Example: Recommended for 4 AP courses is too much work, put not taking next to the one you are eliminating) • Each student’s sheet is personalized and approved courses are highlighted for you. *If you have questions/ concern about a recommendation: • Check the course description book for pre-requisites. • Follow up with your current teacher in that content area.

  15. Recommendations / Tryouts (cont’d) • Auditions for Jazz Band and Select Choir are coming up. • Interviews for Yearbook are coming up, listen for announcements. • Students selected for these programs will have this automatically entered into their course requests

  16. Did you know AP Offers… • A high school curriculum of high academic intensity and quality such as that found in AP courses is the factor that most contributes to a student’s likelihood of completing a college degree. • Exposure to AP level curriculum is a much better predictor of college success than a student’s high school GPA or test scores. • AP courses are designed & updated to reflect what is taught at the college level. • An external evaluation holds course content to high standards. The AP exam is scored by college faculty and high school teachers at special grading sessions.

  17. AP Courses • Prioritize AP Courses over Concurrent Courses (since Concurrent is not weighted typically (exception is Calc II/III) • Keep in mind “balance” is important you want to do well in your AP classes and be prepared for the exam. Recommend to take 3 or fewer college level courses (AP/Concurrent) in order to show best work and not be too overwhelmed. Remember you have other classes and commitments too! See Ms. Rominger if considering 4 courses. • See Ms. Rominger if interested in AP course not available at Lyons M/S.

  18. Concurrent Enrollment at FRCC • Sign up on clipboard now during registration session. • Required Meeting Wednesday, March 14thlunch, Library. Receive info from Rominger. Applications are completed in March/April to participate in the Fall of 2018. • CSU “online”, is also part of your schedule as a class and you do have to attend the class at Lyons in person, it is not purely online. • Concurrent Courses are NOT weighted like Honors or AP courses so if you are trying to build you GPA prioritize those classes first. • Student may earns both HS (.5 per class) and College credit. • There is a cost involved (approx. $175.00 plus books & fees for a class) • District pays for TUITION ONLY. Student must earn “C” or better grade or they have to reimburse the district for the tuition cost.

  21. Important to Know • 12th graders must be enrolled in 6-8 courses each semester. 6 is minimum district policy per Superintendent. Plan on 7-8 if you are going to college and want them to consider you a motivated student. • If you are behind in Core Credits and need to repeat a previous grade level core class, you must make it up during summer school. You may earn 1 credit (two classes, one each semester) in summer school. • You may also need to do e-credit recovery (evening classes) in addition to summer school.

  22. SVVSD Policy for PE Waiver PE Waiver Conditions • A PE waiver is for students that are not able to fit PE into their schedules due to the rigorous amount of courses taken. • Student must have taken 7-8 classes per semester throughout their HS career (none of which can be aiding). • PE Waiver is applied for starting 2nd semester of your Junior year. • 1-2 PE courses are waived, credit is not awarded, rather requirement adjusted (still need 24.5 credits to graduate) Decisions made now/ or in the past may impact qualification for this later…your senior yr. * See Counselor soon if you are concerned you will not make PE credit requirement FYI Policy is different for classes of 2020+

  23. What should I do if I want to improve my ACT or SAT score for college entrance or scholarship eligibility purposes? After you take the test in the spring Jr. Yr …immediately identify when the next test options are & determine which one(s) you will register for. Pay attention to registration deadlines (they may occur in summer). *SAT has June and early October offerings collegeboard.org for registration deadlines and info *ACT has June and September offerings act.org for registration deadlines and info Note: many of you will do early applications for college (this is becoming more standard) deadlines range from Nov. 1-15. In order to have your scores in for applications (they expect them) you would need to take a test session above. Which one to take? Colorado Colleges will honor either. Other colleges take a look at admissions on their websites.
