A Glance at the Broadband Value Chain Industry in Bangladesh in 2022 The future of broadband internet connection in Bangladesh is heavily shifting toward a mobile- dominated environment. In some cases, it has already begun. But it’s important because according to ITU research (2012), every 10-point increase in Broadband connection seems to increase economic growth rates by 1.38% in middle-income countries. And by the end of July 2021, Bangladesh had 176.94m, mobile phone users. So, let’s take a look at the current value chain, major activities, and cost structure of the Broadband Industry in Bangladesh in 2022. Let’s dive in— Contribution to National Broadband Policy Broadband Commission made a statement that the penetration of a broadband plan is affiliated with a 2.5 percent increase in fixed broadband internet price in Bangladesh and a 7.4% growth in mobile broadband penetration on average. Bangladesh's National Broadband Policy 2009 had it the same way, which focuses on endeavors throughout the industry, while the policy cooperates with policymakers, highlighting broadband as a priority, and indicates the country's devotion to broadband rollout. Usually, there are 3 phases in the broadband penetration plan that is developed by UNESCO, they are- Deployment Adoption Integration Based on the current value chain, Bangladesh is now almost to the integration part where the latest broadband penetration for the past 2 decades has already been adopted. It’s also made possible because, in the past 10 years, the National Broadband policy has made digital literacy
programs and community projects that had goals to promote e-education, e-health, e- commerce, and e-governance initiatives. The second phase looks out on the telecom industry as an indicator, while the third phase concentrates on analysing the social, economic, and institutional uses of broadband. Since the rise of tech firms, the growth rate has taken a positive turn, according to WDR 2016. Based on their report, three major groups including small, medium, and large tech firms are dominating the share market. Since all country groups are interested in using broadband, 88% of large firms in the groups reported using broadband. The difference is most noticeable between their small businesses, with the lower-middle-income firms accounting for 43 percent and the upper-middle-income firms accounting for 60 percent. Compared to 43% of large firms, the differences get to be nearly equivalent for firms that use the Internet for more innovative software operations, in developing countries like Bangladesh, 17% of small firms market their services or products via the internet, indicating a large benefit of broadband connection. Value Chain in Internal Connectivity Bangladesh is linked to the global Internet via seven links: one submarine cable in Cox's Bazar and six cross-border underwater cables designed to connect a dozen submarine cables touching down in Chennai, India. Each underwater link is expected to cost USD 5 million in financing. With IP transit prices declining at a quick pace, the current payment policy is USD 5 per megabyte per second to link international gateways of Bangladesh to access global networks, through the gateways in Singapore. Value Chain in Domestic Transmission Costs in domestic transmission show a significant component of offering access to network connection, especially outside of Dhaka. In some cases, a 1 megabyte per second link between Dhaka and Chittagong could cost as much as BDT5,000 per month. per unit transmission costs can be taken down with the potential found with clear vision by the country, by observing and examining the cost. Some of the facts in the value chain to establish a broadband connection with the national gateway are:
1.It generally takes USD60 million, bringing the total cost to USD100 million to link 290 Upazilas (sub-districts) to the national gateway costs at the same time. 2.It generally costs USD450 million to link 4,500 union parishads to 487 Upazilas. 3.BTCL has already invested USD 100 million in adding national fiber optics for the entire 64 districts. 4.The overall cost to link all the unions in the country to the national gateway is USD550 million. Hoping for the Better Most countries around the world have launched massive initiatives to build nationwide fiber optics backbone infrastructure, with Bangladesh moving faster than most developing countries to make a mark in broadband internet connection. But above all, network transmission on a domestic platform (domestic transmission) seems to be the door key to Bangladesh’s one chance to establish a high-speed access network for expanded services with affordable broadband services. Bangladesh Government is making supreme efforts to expand domestic transmission infrastructure with high-speed broadband internet service to link rural areas of Bangladesh to Digital Bangladesh.
