  1. The war ended on 11th November 1918. A whole generation of men had been wiped out. In France, where most of the fighting had taken place, land was destroyed and the country was in ruins.

  2. At the start of war in 1914 everyone had said that ‘it would all be over by xmas. It was to be another 4 years before this happened. When the war was over it was difficult for many to believe.

  3. Daily Mirror Headlines: Armistice, Published 12 November 1918 History has no more glorious day than yesterday, which saw the end of the Great World War and the triumph of Great Britain and her Allies. Germany, beaten in the field, menaced by certain invasion and overwhelmed by internal revolution, capitulated to the Allies and accepted what will probably be the sternest terms of all time. The Armistice, which is to last for 36 days, was signed at 5am by the German delegates. Hostilities ceased at 11am. The Great War Lasted - Four years, 14 Weeks, and two days

  4. Research • You are now going to research and answer the following questions: • Why did Germany agree to end the war? • What happened after the armistice was signed?

  5. How do we remember our war dead? • We commemorate our dead by buying and wearing poppies on and around 11th November each year. • The reason we do this is that in the bloody fields in France when war was raging and the trenches were filling with water the poppies still grew in no mans land. Forward

  6. In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on rowThat mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe;To you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who dieWe shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields. Back

  7. How do we remember our war dead? • Another very important way that we remember our war dead is through the war memorials we have across Britain. • Nearly every city town and village that lost men during the war has an example.

  8. The common wealth war graves commission • Some of you will have had chance either on holiday or in photographs to view the war graves of British service men killed in action. These beautiful sites are maintained by the war graves commission. • They also have huge databases with information about our war dead. • We can now access this information really easily on line at www.cwgc.org • Your task for the last five minutes of the lesson is to think about what you would like to use this resource for…. • Eg finding family who were killed Looking at significant dates • Write 3 questions down in your book that you could investigate using this resource.
