What is plagiarism? • Using another writer’s work - words, contents, illustrations, graphs, etc. without giving credit to the original author • Examples: • Submit a paper purchased from another source • Hand in a paper written by someone else as your own • Copy material into a written assignment that has been taken from someone else’s paper • Paraphrase material without proper citation • Submit the same paper in more than one class without instructor’s permission (Carter, Bishop, Kravits, Maurin, 2009) • ..\..\Plagiarism.doc

  3. So what? Consequences • Failing grade on assignment • Suspension • In serious cases – expulsion from school • In more serious cases - fraud

  4. How to avoid it? • Paraphrasing • Summarizing • Proper Citation

  5. Paraphrasing • Totally rewrite the author’s original work in your own words • It is not enough to change a few words • Even paraphrases need to be properly cited

  6. Summarizing • A summary is a condensed version of an idea • It is an overview of previous work and is written in your own words • But since it is taken from an original source, you should use proper citation When in doubt, cite.
