Managing Information Resources • No longer “managing databases” • Much more information (good thing) • Intranet • Internet • Information resources need to be managed (strategic) • Data • Information • Knowledge
Internal Record Based (point 1) • Companies need to get internal data under control (company data sharing) • Dirty Data • Different databases/names/time frames • Any data that does not match • DBMS = Database management systems • 1960’s • Database Administration • Data Administration • Manage all computerized data resources • 1970’s
Biggest Problem for IRB • Inconsistent Data Definitions! • Incompatible data definitions • Application to application • Dept. to dept/ site to site / division to divison • Use data from existing files + add new data • The same data in different files with different names • Same name for different data • Different update cycles • Makes data administration much more difficult
Data Models (point 2) • Data models • Part of Internal Record Based information • Four data Models • Hierarchical Model each element is subordinate to another • Network Model can have more than one parent • Relational Model is most popular today • Objective Model id Newest • New Data Models are needed!! • Some applications need better data models • Size • Calculations • Search technologies • Data mining
Internal Document-Based Information • Management • Traditionally rested with the VP of administration • Oversees document management (not data records) • Issue facing CIOs • Increasingly documentation is becoming electronic • New documents that could be electronic voice messages, letters, notes, blue prints • Paper and Electronic documents will continue to soar form just over 2 trillion in 1998 to 20 trillion by 2005 • The present of printed documents will be reduced form 90% to 40%
External Record Based Information • Generally been end users, not IS dept. • Need for coordination of services • Growing in popularity • Data can come form many places • Other businesses • Marketing firms • Credit card companies • Profile companies/ Government
External Document Based Information • Hard to manage • Responsibility of corporate librarians • Electronic documents are growing • Popular Dow Jones News • Need for some IS leadership and Guide lines
What IS Managers Need to Think About! Future Planning (point 3) • New information/data/knowledge management needs! • Document Based • New frontier for IS • Growing very fast / electric documents will pass paper in 05 • External Record Based • Previously not Internal IS problem • Increasing in popularity and value on content • External Document Based • Hard to manage • Growing/ with need for IS help
My CLJ • Motorola new security processors • More bandwidth • Calculate encryption algorithms • Operational speed increased • Wireless compatibilities increased
Critical Thinking Questions • A single worldwide file system (Page 222) • Will this happen, and what areas will we see this first? • How will we access these new file systems? (Connection / tool) • Will security become a problem for worldwide databases? • How will business change with a worldwide file system? • What about a database rules and standards?
