Lesson 06 Starter Learning objective: Manufactured an entire VEX Clawbot from fabricated component parts, applied post processing techniques to form and shape each part, and considered the quality checks required to achieve quality assurance. Using stock files, your task today is to assemble a fully working plasma cut VEX Clawbot. To achieve this, you will need to:1. Organise your components onto the bed of the plasma cutter2. Send the file to cut3. Post process all of the parts4. Form the parts to a high tolerance5. Assemble all parts together6. Assemble on control and motion components7. Prove through testing you have manufactured a high quality outcome Key words: CAD, Library, heat processes, acrylic, MDF, profile, forming.

  4. Full fabrication Fabricating a full VEX Clawbot As part of this lesson, your task is to keep a simple manufacturing notebook. In this book you are tasked with making notes on all of the stages of make, what you have achieved, what works and does not, and any issues you incurred in the manufacture. Once you complete the build, you will submit your notebook and finished product for assessment. Your teacher will assess your:- fabrication to a high tolerance- ability to record the fabrication process- approach to solving problems- use of technical language and terminology

Full fabrication Final outcome Here are three Clawbot robotsThe firsthas been made using thin steel on the plasma cutter, with a poor hole accuracy and surface finish, but excellent accuracy of the forming using the sheet metal bender.The secondhas been made using thicker steel on the industrial laser cutter, with excellent hole accuracy but less accurate forming on the sheet metal bender due to its toughness.The thirdhas been made using thicker steel but with only the required build holes, reducing fabrication time but making it less adaptable to other design builds.

Full fabrication Grading fabrication As part of GCSE (AQA) assessment, students can be graded on the following areas: - Level of skill and accuracy- Use of appropriate tools, materials and technology skilfully and safely- Level of independence - Use of quality control checks for accuracy- Commercial viability of the outcome Your teacher will grade you against these in order to provide you with a “make” grade for your project work today.
