  1. The NatVent Buildings JOULE Work package 2 Objectives of WP 2 19 naturally ventilated buildings The monitoring campaigns Performance of naturally ventilated buildings The monitoring results Select a building... Final conclusions NatVent

  2. WP2 - Objectives The aim of this work package was: • To evaluate the performance of existing ad-hoc buildings designed and constructed specifically as energy-efficient naturally ventilated buildings • To identify the advantages and shortcomings of natural ventilation strategies • To specify the overall design and construction conditions required for achieving successful natural ventilation

  3. 19 Monitored Buildings... • 19 naturally ventilated buildings were selected from seven EU countries. Overview of the 19 buildings: • Belgium: BE1 - BE2 - BE3 • Switzerland: CH1 - CH2 - CH3 • Denmark: DK1 -DK2 - DK3 • Great Britain: GB1- GB2 -GB3 • Norway: NO1 - NO2 • The Netherlands: NL1 - NL2 - NL3 • Sweden: SE1 - SE2 An overview of 19 buildings is given in the document overview.pdf (\Reports\Monitoring\...)

  4. The Monitoring Campaigns • The 19 buildings selected were monitored under winter and summer conditions • The following parameters were measured in all of the buildings: • Temperature • Internal air quality (H2O, CO2, …) • Ventilation rate • Wind outdoor: direction and velocity • Wind indoor: velocity • The parameters were measured in 4 rooms and 1 corridor for a minimum of one week The basic monitoring set-up and the monitoring protocol is described in document monitor_protoc.pdf (\Reports\Monitoring\…)

  5. WP2 - Monitoring Results The results of the monitoring programmes are presented in the following documents: Summary Reports (\Reports \Monitoring Reports \Summary Reports\…) • global presentation of the buildings ( 4p./ building) • contents: building description - ventilation strategy and technology - winter and summer monitoring results - conclusions Detailed Reports (\Reports \Monitoring Reports \Detailed Reports\…) • detailed reports of all 19 monitoring campaigns ( 20 p./ campaign) • contents: monitoring set up - analysis of results - conclusions You can read and print pdf-files with the Acrobat® Reader ®3.0. Program. This program is free. Download it from the Acrobat web site: www.adobe.com OR run the installation file ar32e301(1).exe in the directory \Installation

  6. Select a Building... BE1: PROBE Building GB2: Canning Crescent Centre BE2: Keppekouter Building GB3: Portland Street Building BE3: Renson Headquarters NO1: Ulleval Administration Build. CH1: VELUX Building NO2: Pfizer Building CH2: EWZ Building NL1: European Patent Office CH3: Basler Versicherungen Building NL2: Town Hall of Zevenhuizen-M. DK1: E.Pihl & Son AS Headquarters NL3: Tax Office of Enschede DK2: BRF Kredit Headquarters SE1: Tage Møller Building DK3: WindowMaster Office Build. SE2: Technical Office of Varberg GB1: BRE Energy Efficient Office NatVent

  7. Final Conclusions (1...) There were 8 key findings from the 19 building monitoring programme: 1. The challenge is to provide comfortable conditions within an energy efficient building. 2. It is essential to understand what natural ventilation actually is. 3. Ventilation for IAQ should optimise both IAQ and energy efficiency 4. The required air flow rates for summer comfort are much higher than for IAQ control and the thermal mass of the building must be accessible

  8. The NatVent Buildings JOULE Final Conclusions (2|) 5. Achieving comfortable conditions in the summer requires more than just high ventilation rates 6. Successful design involves more than simply estimating air flow rates 7. The creation of an attractive environment for innovation is extremely important 8. Natural ventilation can be an attractive option, but NOT the only option You can find more information in the Final Monitoring Report (final_monitor_rep.pdf) in the directory \Reports\Monitoring Objectives of WP 2 19 naturally ventilated buildings The monitoring campaigns The monitoring results Select a building...
