Understanding Stage 1 Hypnagogic Sleep: Characteristics and Experiences

Stage 1 hypnagogic sleep is the initial phase of the sleep cycle characterized by low amplitude, high-frequency brain waves. During this stage, as you drift into sleep, body movements can become involuntary, and external stimuli have a reduced effect on awareness. People often experience sensations such as myoclonia, where they feel as if they are falling or experiencing sudden jerks. This sensitive state of unconsciousness is common, often occurring during brief naps, and can be easily interrupted by minimal disturbances.
