  2. Assistive Technology • The U.S. Department of Education defines an assistive technology device as any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of a child with disabilities. • An assistive technology service is any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition or use of an assistive technology device.

  3. Assistive Technology Act of 1998 • The Assistive Technology Act created a grant program to provide federal funds to state programs that address the assistive technology need of individuals with disabilities. • All federal agencies are required to make electronic information technology accessible to individuals with disabilities. • Section 508 helps to eliminate barriers for people with disabilities as well as give them new opportunities. • The law applies to all federal agencies when they develop, maintain or use electronic and information technology.

  4. IDEA 2004 • IDEA 2004 requires IEP teams to consider the assistive technology needs of all children with disabilities based on each child’s unique needs. • The law requires schools to use assistive technology to maximize accessibility for children with disabilities. • If the IEP team finds that assistive technology is needed, the school district is responsible for providing it.

  5. Hearing Impaired • The PockeTalker Ultra is an assistive listening device that amplifies sound. The PockeTalker is a personal amplifier that helps individuals hear better by amplifying sounds that are close, while reducing background noise. • The PockeTalker Ultra helps individuals who are hearing impaired be able to hear lectures, small group or one on one conversations and even the TV much easier. This device will make communicating more productive and less frustrating for people who are hearing impaired.

  6. Seeing Impaired • The BigKeys keyboard has keys that are 1” square keys and can be in ABC or QWERTY format. Keys can be black, white, or multi-colored. The BigKeys keyboard can be used with a desktop computer, laptop, and an iPad. • The larger size keys and color combinations on the keyboard helps students with visual impairments be able to see and press the keys easier when typing assignments on the computer or iPad. • This keyboard can also be beneficial for students with physical disabilities too.
