  1. What are habitats and environments?

  2. Overview You will learn about… • habitats • the regions of Georgia. • the habitats found in Georgia. • the organisms that live in Georgia’s habitats. • GPS Standard: • S3L1a Students will differentiate between the habitats • of Georgia (mountains, marsh/swamp, coast, Piedmont, • Atlantic Ocean) and the organisms that live there.

  3. Environment • Animals live in many different environments around the world. Everything that surrounds a living thing makes up its ENVIRONMENT. In what kind of environment do polar bears live?

  4. ECOSYSTEM • An ECOSYSTEM is made up of all the living and nonliving things that interact in one place.

  5. What is a habitat? A habitat isany place where organisms live together naturally. It is like a neighborhood in nature.

  6. Habitat Every animal has a habitat. A habitat is a place in an ecosystem where a plant or animal lives. A habitat is where an animal finds the food and water it needs to live. The animal also finds shelter and living space there.

  7. What does an organism need in a habitat? • Water • Shelter • Food

  8. How are these animals meeting their needs in their habitats?

  9. Water is necessary for the barracuda to survive.

  10. Small rodents like the gopher dig burrows in the ground to create shelter

  11. Animals choose their homes based on their needs. Can you guess which Animal likes to live in a cave?

  12. Now choose the Animal that lives in a tree?

  13. From the islands to Savannah, Macon and Atlanta. From Dahlongega to Helen and to Rome, From dusty back roads and starry nights, Wide boulevards and city lights. Georgia, Georgia is where I live. Georgia is my home. From the farms and fields of the coastal plain With the warm sunshine and cooling rain To the piedmont with its long rolling hills To the mountain highlands and winter chills Hear the call of the whip-poor-wills. Georgia, Georgia is where I live. Georgia is my home. From the plains to the piedmont to the mountain peaks, Peach tree groves and city streets, Georgia, Georgia is where I live. Georgia is my home. Georgia is my home. 14. What habitats are found in Georgia? • Remember: a habitat is the area where a plant or animal naturally grows and lives. • There are many different types of habitats found in Georgia. • Let’s learn about some… Did you know that organism is another name for living thing?

  15. What are the regions of Georgia? Appalachian Plateau Ridge & Valley Blue Ridge Piedmont Upper Coastal Plain Lower Coastal Plain

  16. Georgia’s Habitats • Georgia provides a home for many animals and plants. • The habitats found across the state are:

  17. Georgia’s Mountains Rugged mountains, ridges, and rivers are found in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Ridge and Valley regions of Georgia.

  20. Piedmont • Rolling hills and pine-hardwood forests are found throughout the Piedmont region of Georgia. • Atlanta is in this region! Did you know that Piedmont means foot of the mountain?

  21. Animals of the Piedmont The Brown Thrasher is the state bird. Click the bird to hear the sound it makes. Brown Thrasher Copperhead Snake Eastern Chipmunk
