  1. Question of the Day • Think about a team sport and imagine two different types of coaches. One coach shouts at the players when the team loses and threatens to remove players who make mistakes. The other coach gives the team pep talks and advice when they lose. Which team do you think would be more successful? Explain your reasoning.

  2. Ancient China A Brief History (1700 B.C.E. – 220 C.E.)

  3. What is a Dynasty? • A dynasty is a family or group that rules for several generations. They might rule for a very long time or a relatively short period.

  4. 1700 B.C.E. – 1027 B.C.E. First Chinese Dynasty Believed Ancestors lived with the gods and controlled what happened in life – therefore were very respectful of and courteous to elders. Shang Dynasty

  5. Oracle Bones were used by religious leaders to answer important questions or to predict thefuture. Developed a system of writing using characters – the writing allowed the leaders to communicatethroughout the empire. 3. Developed Bronze metal work – both artwork and weapons and armor. Shang Dynasty

  6. 1027B.C.E. – 221 B.C.E. Overthrew the Shang Dynasty First ruler to state the idea of a “Mandate from Heaven” – “god-given” right to rule and to pass rule down within a family. Government broke down into 6 rival states by the end of the Dynasty – basically separate small empires. Zhou Dynasty

  7. Qin (Chin) Dynasty • 221 B.C.E. – 206 B.C.E. • United the area known as China today by defeating all rival states and implementing a strong centralized bureaucracy to protect his rule.

  8. Qin (Chin) Dynasty • A bureaucracy is structured like a pyramid, with a few people at the top and many at the bottom. At each level, people direct those who are below them. • Leader (The Dragon King) took name ShiHuangDi. (First Emperor of China)

  9. Qin (Chin) Dynasty • Standardized writing, money, weights & measures, laws, education. • Began building Great Wall of China to protect his empire from Mongol invasion • Built Tombwith life-size clay army (thousands of soldiers, no two faces the same)

Han Dynasty • 206 B.C.E. – 221 C.E. • Local warrior defeated other leaders after ShiHuangDi’s death to take control of the Empire. • Kept Qin’s administration structure and standardization, but put local governors with some power in place to oversee different provinces (regions) and returned to Confucian ideals

  11. Han Dynasty • Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who taught that people needed to respect the old ways in order for China to maintain its greatness. Treat others how you wanted to be treated. • Started public schools for Chinese youth and built Confucian Universities. • Mandated (required) educational criteria for government workers, built the Grand School to train government workers.

Achievements of the Han Dynasty • Government • Government officials were now chosen based on their ability and knowledge not their social status. • Men had to pass a long and difficult civil service exam. • They were not allowed to serve in their home district to prevent them from giving special favors to friends and family.

  16. Medicine Ancient Chinese believed that illnesses happened when the forces of yin and yang in the body were out of balance. To balance they tried: Acupuncture Moxibustion – setting material on fire on your skin Learned to judge health by the heartbeat and discovered that blood circulates Also discovered an anesthetic – something that takes away the feeling of pain Achievements of the Han Dynasty
