Palen, Jr. It is fair to say that we are in “unusual” times in America.   We have headlines about impeaching the President, and we have a country that seems deeply polarized.  I can’t claim any special knowledge of information from Washington insiders, but I can convey the thoughts of people in Europe, Asia, and Australia, whom I know and respect.

Palen, Jr. To a person, these observers are appalled at the direction the United States has taken since Trump was elected in 2016.    In the words of one European friend, “the United States is no longer a trusted ally.”  Alliances that have been in place since World War II now seem to be in peril, said another, with policy being made by tweets.   These people seem no consistency in US policy, as evidenced by such things as the recent withdrawal of US troops from an ISIS stronghold in Syria, to the decision about settlements in Israel that, overnight, changed four decades of US policy in that region.

Palen, Jr. In plain words, these non US observers wonder “what the hell is going on” with America.   And, so do many of us in this country.   Norms of behavior, and principles of government are being upended.   And for what end?   We are on a road that is not consistent with democracy. Today, and every day, the truth matters.   “Fake news” and parsing of words must not carry the day.  Pathetic attempts to defend US “leaders” are seen by these observers for just what they are—desperate attempts to allow behavior that cannot be tolerated in a country founded on certain principles that must not be questioned.
