Benedict T. Palen, Jr. - Why are many of us in such a rush to leave home as we get into our early adult years? Is it part of human nature to leave the place where we were nurtured? 2. Home—Why Do We Leave; Why We Should Return By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. Why are many of us in such a rush to leave home as we get into our early adult years? Is it part of human nature to leave the place where we were nurtured? Are the pastures greener somewhere down the road? Why do we often leave the friendships that we built when we were young? Is a gene of restlessness part of our DNA? As we age, many of us become more aware, and often regretful, about having left the place that we called home. By no means is every home the perfect place, but for the big majority of people, it is where we learned many life lessons that we carry with us years later. As the song so eloquently says, the “house that built me” is the foundation of our lives.

  3. Home—Why Do We Leave; Why We Should Return By Benedict T. Palen, Jr. We can go back home again, perhaps not permanently, and perhaps not always in the physical sense, but it is a wise choice to make for many of us as we search for meaning in our lives. In a world full of strife, and where social norms are challenged without regard to moral codes, there are places of comfort, places that warm our hearts. Take time each day, or as often as you can, to think of the good memories from your home where you grew up. Draw on those memories in times of stress that we all experience at one time or the other in our lives. Sure, some of the memories will be sad because they evoke thoughts of people who are no longer alive. But remember the good times that we associated with home. And teach your children of how important these things are so that they will carry on the legacy.
