  1. Hiring The Right Candidate For The Job | Benedict T. Palen, Jr. In the span of 40 years in the business world, it seems to me that the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of hard skills in some industries, and not remained focused on the things that really matter—respect for others, ability to communicate orally and in writing, and being keyed into the notion of making a difference every day.

Palen, Jr. All of this involves the seeming prehistoric idea of looking someone in the eye balls from across a table, and taking the measure of the person. Do they come across as respectful? Can they articulate an idea in a clear and convincing way? Are they wired to make a difference? These things may seem old fashioned, but in truth they go to the core of who we are as human beings, and they form the basis for good relationships—whether personally or in business. I spoke recently to a group of employees from a cross section of departments at a large farming business. Before we dived into the details on the particular topics for that meeting, I spoke about four things that matter most before getting to the items at hand:

  4. Hiring The Right Candidate For The Job | Benedict T. Palen, Jr. To my way of thinking, these are some of the things that a business should be looking for when considering candidates for employment.
