  3. Federal Infrastructure Stimulus Fund Application • Submitted May 1, 2009 • Scope and schedule outlined, to be completed by March 31, 2011 • $63 million project cost estimate • Bridge crossing concept: • ~25 m width • 3-lanes • Bike lanes, sidewalk, trail, rail • New approach road alignments

  4. BRIDGE ALIGNMENT & APPROACH CONCEPT[as submitted in grant application]

  7. APPROACH CONCEPT – WEST SIDE • Benefits Include: • Maintains at-grade Esquimalt / Harbour Intersection • Includes overpass between E&N and GGRT Trails and improved hotel access • Provides cyclist / pedestrian access on both sides of bridge (N+S) at approximate 4-5% grade

  8. APPROACH CONCEPT – EAST SIDE[recent concept] • Benefits Include: • Will be able to connect Harbour Pathway in front of east abutment • Provides improved cyclist and pedestrian facilities • Provides potential train station site

  9. Double-Leaf Bascule Concept • Benefits • Two smaller / lighter lift spans; less susceptible to wind loads • Reduced mechanical loading on each span • Some potential cost saving • Challenges • Power to west side of bridge • Mid-span rail connection

Project Benefits • Expected to generate nearly 800 short-term jobs [based on 12 jobs / $1 million in value] • Enhanced emergency preparedness and response • Support to transit and passenger rail service • Enhanced pedestrian and cyclist facilities • Enhanced accessibility • Triple-bottom line RFP process
