Mental Health Leadership Initiative – A Canadian perspective - $ and Sense con’t • Over 21% of all drug claims are to treat mental illness; • 50% of Occupational Physicians were surveyed - mental health related issues account for 50% - 70% of issues seen; • From 2004 to 2005 mental illness-related pharmacy claims increased 5.4% c.f. a total pharmacy claims increase of 3.8%. Mental Health Leadership Initiative – Mental Health and the Recession • April 2009 - the College of Family Physicians of Canada, conducted a physician survey - ~ 88% responded that patients had presented stress related problems related to the current economy; • Every 1% increase in unemployment leads to a 2-3% jump in risk of mental health problems; • Increased risk of suicide and self-harm; • Increased demand for services, antidepressant meds; • Presenteeism likely to cost around 1.5 times more than absenteeism. A Workplace Framework for Mental Health – Impact of the Framework The mentally healthy workplace The “toxic work-place” An unsustainable workplace – poor worker health and safety experience, and tumbling productivity A sustainable workplace – psychologically and physically healthy, safe, and productive Measured Workplace status • A systematic approach will that is based on the principle of continual improvement will enable organizations to be more sustainable, healthier, safer, and more productive.   18. Mental Health Leadership Initiative – Measuring Key Workplace Attributes • Measure the attributes that encourage positive mental health in the workplace. The use of a tool such as GuardingMinds@Work may be of great value: • (www.guardingmindsatwork.ca) • Developed by B.C. and Ontario experts on workplace mental health based on a systematic review of scientific literature - sponsored by Great-West Life; • Identifies 12 key workplace psycho- social factors that, if absent, increase worker mental health risk and compromise psychological safety; • Is available free of charge. A short survey is also available for an initial scan of the work-place. Whilst it is a Canadian document you will find it to be global in thought. In Canada increasingly the law… • Employers must ensure a psychologically safe workplace as a natural extension of the traditional healthy and physically safe workplace; • Organizations need to recognize that ensuring a psychologically safe workplace is a corporate governance issue – i.e. they must set policy, provide direction and resources, and measure results; • Boards of Directors are increasingly providing direction to organizations on all aspects of risk management including health; • Employees are expecting organizations to meet their needs with respect to key workplace health aspects – including those that impact on mental health. Human costs more than physical • Do we think of the psychological safety of workplaces as intrinsic to the health and safety of our workplaces? • Are we integrating the knowledge into our management systems? • Research and experience says we should be.
