Mountain men: explorers and trappers Jedediah Smith Jim Beckwourth Businessmen: set up a rendezvous between West fur trappers and East traders William Henry Ashley Mormon: wanted to find religious freedom Joseph Smith: founder Brigham Young: replaced Smith Land Spectators: Bought land and resold it at a higher price

  8. A difficult journey to the West… People had to plan ahead to have enough food, water, and supplies. Go into unfamiliar land Face many different land elements Mountains Deserts Wilderness Rivers Worry about Native Americans Most people didn’t have any problems with the N.A., but that was a fear of people heading West Long distance hardships
  9. Santa Fe Trail William Becknell discovered this pass Began in Independence, Missouri and ended in Santa Fe, New Mexico Positive: this pass was more goods friendly The trail didn’t go as high into the mountains Negative: part of the pass was in the desert
  10. Mormon Trail This trail was blazed for religious reasons. Joseph Smith began the Mormon Church in NY. Brigham Young took over after Smith’s death. Young took the Mormon Church to Utah to allow them to worship in peace.
  11. Oregon Trail Independence, Missouri to Oregon Territory Oregon Territory was jointly owned by U.S. & Britain The influx of settlers in O.T. caused tension between U.S. & Britain. People were lured to O.T. because of the stories of sunshine and wheat growing tall
