  2. HISTORY 1962 - day centre opened in the crypt of St Giles Church, Camberwell. Offered food and company for homeless and other vulnerable people Later introduced informal case work

  3. HISTORY CONTINUED • In 2002 a structured casework model was developed • Outcomes monitored • Additional services developed – training, prisons, community

  4. Day Centre - SUCCESSES 500 clients used service per year 100 clients per year placed in hostels Almost all had situation improved Service extremely popular with clients Well thought of by funders, especially ODPM and charitable trusts

  5. PROBLEMS Service £500k p.a. ODPM grant of £250k p.a. being halved Proportion of clients sabotaged progress

  6. BUT…. Everyone said it couldn’t work, especially for clients with multiple needs…. No food, social activity etc = no clients We said ‘Let’s try it’…. Half the staff means half the costs Skilled staff no longer policing day centre, but using skills to deliver results for clients

  7. RESULTS New service cost £250k p.a. - half the cost of the day centre Accepted many more clients than day centre Delivered more housing outcomes to the same client group in first year

  8. RESULTS CONTINUED… Support needs met: 180 clients with mental health problems 130 clients with alcohol problems 190 clients with drug problems 50 clients with both drug and alcohol problems

  9. Other support needs: 200 clients with physical disabilities and/or significant health needs 55 clients with problems relating to domestic violence 120 clients with history of repeat offending Clients have average of 3 support needs each

  11. Summary of first year • 611 new clients given initial assessment • 411 of these received casework service • 182 client with complex needs rehoused from April 05 to March 06 • Clients have 3 average of support needs
