LinkedIn Stats • Over 35 million users total • Average household income of $109,000 • Users tend to be more senior • 66% are decision makers • 28% are director/VP level or above • More connections increases the likelihood of higher personal income • Salaried people between $200K-$350K were seven times more likely than others to have over 150 connections!

  4. Why Brand Yourself on LinkedIn? • It’s about you, not your company • It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you • It builds name recognition • It increases visibility • It opens doors to future… • Pay increases or promotions • Business deals • Career opportunities

  7. Maximize Your Profile • Add all your employers, schools, degrees, certificates, associations, groups & interests • Give brief descriptions • Join groups or start your own • State your goals in the summary section You choose what information you want shown!

Start & Expand Your Network • Gather all your old contact email addresses (E-mail inbox, business cards, Act!, Goldmine, etc.) • Merge all the above into one Excel sheet • Save it as a CSV and import that into LinkedIn • Or copy and paste addresses separated by commas • Once uploaded, you will notice many people already have LinkedIn accounts. Invite them all! • Search LinkedIn for other colleagues and classmates

  9. Inviting Contacts • The bigger your network, the more leads you can generate • Don’t invite people via the “Get Introduced Through a Connection” button • To add someone, find their profile then the click “Add [name] to your network” button

  10. Search the LinkedIn Network • Search by: • Common job titles • Specific company names • Filter by: • Geographic locations • Industries • Searching within your groups • People who have joined recently

Company and Industry Advance Search • Search by company and keywords: • Company: McDonalds • Checkbox current company only • Sort by: Keyword relevance • Search by industries and titles: • Industry: Fast Food • Title: Supervisor • Location: Located in or Near the US, Postal Code 38017 • Sort by: Degrees and endorsers

LinkedIn Introductions & OpenLink Messages • When contacting people… • Be clear, brief, informative and honest • Make sure the messages is personalized • They will see your profile, which builds trust • Introductions and OpenLink messages are freed for reuse when: • You withdraw the message • You don’t get a response in 7 days • The person accepts your message

  13. What if Five Introductions is Not Enough? You have used up all 5 Introductions. What can you do now? • Pay LinkedIn for more Introductions and OpenLink messages. • Direct contact through research • Make a phone call • E-mail the person directly

  14. Direct Contact Outside of LinkedIn • Right below their name is… • Their title • Their employer • Their City and State • So you could… • Google “Company, City, State” for work numbers • Use Zabasearch.com to get their home number • Google “FirstnameLastname @company.com”

  17. Canned Letter - Subject Line Write a subject line that gets the persons attention. SUBJECT: Requesting Information About the Burger Flipping Position at McDonalds

  18. Canned Letter - 1st Paragraph First paragraph is the introduction. To introduce myself, my name is <name here> and I found your information via LinkedIn. I have been researching companies and <company name> has a position that fits my skill set, <name/title of job>: HTTP://URL.OF.JOB.POSTING.HERE.COM

  19. Canned Letter - 2nd Paragraph 3 to 4 action items that fit the description of the position. Most recently at <last company worked for> I worked extensively on burger flipping and frying potatoes. I also worked at the cash register when needed. At the end of the day I would mop the floors and clean the bathrooms.

  20. Canned Letter - Final Paragraph Compliment the person and ask for advice. I know you must be very busy, but if you have any ideas for me as to who I should talk to about this position, I would appreciate your advice. I can be reached at the contact information below. If we could have e-mail or phone contact, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
