  3. Conduction • Energy is transferred from molecule to molecule as they collide • Solids are best at transferring heat by conduction • Heat is moves from hot to cold

  4. Fast (hot) atoms bump into slow (cold) atoms • Fast atoms make slower atoms speed up • Kinetic energy (energy of motion) is transferred from hot to cold • Temperature is a measure of average kinetic energy

  5. Convection • Transfer of heat energy by movement in fluids (liquids and gases) • Warmer region of fluid expands and becomes less dense

  6. Convection • Less dense , warmer material rises, more dense, cooler material sinks • Convection currents form

  7. Radiation • Transfer of electromagnetic energy through space • Electromagnetic energy is energy in light • Light travels through space as a wave

  8. Forms of Electromagnetic Energy • Radio waves • Microwaves • Infrared (heat) • Visible light • UV • X-rays • Gamma rays

  9. Characteristics of electromagnetic radiation • Travels through space at 186,000 miles per second • Each form has a different wavelength, frequency and energy • Higher frequency has more energy
